I got into my share of trouble with the law and dad could get quite angry, but he led by example, not by intimidation. I never feared punishment by my dad, no matter how severe, and sometimes it was. I feared disappointing my dad.

That's a pretty funny image, George Washington and Tom Jefferson, running down the street with a wide screen and a couple of six packs!

That's a good point. I feared disappointing my parents most of all growing up. I feel like my daughters are at that point, too, but it is a matter of mutual respect.

I cannot imagine beating the shit out of my daughters the way the mom on that video did; however, I also cannot imagine my daughters rioting in the streets and throwing crap at police officers when they should be at home or school. My kids don't "run the roads."

Would have been funny to see the mothers of those cops who threw rocks back get out there and slap them upside the head.

It's such a cultural difference our answers don't scratch the surface. It goes way beyond any much too late 'discipline' now. Stupid violent idiots can't be fixed unless generations magically get educated and break the cycle..

    Not happening likely ever.

Turn violent? It wasnt about protesting. It was all about violence and mayhem. Keeps happening and will continue to do so. The only deterrent is force. The very thing they claim to be protesting.

Actually it's about the lack of hope and opportunity for the vast majority in that community. They have been led down a path of dependence by their leaders and feared, ignored or worse by those who should best help them. The only thing they think they have is anger and violence. Most see no way out so they rage when given excuse. Haven't you seen and heard that virtually nothing has changed in almost 50 years?
The cycle of poverty and despair it caused must be broken. Frankly I don't know what it will take beyond investment by the rest of society to teach and invest in those trapped and help them pull themselves up. I have zero faith that big government programs will bring anything but what they have for two generations. Short sighted business driven solely by profit has fled the area rather than work to improve. If they could help build a community with jobs and hope they (business) would do well by doing good. Finally treating the result (crime, drugs, violence) rather than the cause will not make any change. The law enforcement organization has lost sight of their real responsibility of making the area safe. They have acquired an us against them mentality rather than a true protect and serve.
It will take years to change. Many trapped are not recoverable but hopefully enough are. Those need to be encouraged and nurtured. Success will begat more success. Only as a total effort can this be stopped and changed. There is no single answer.

Wait a minute. Are you saying that food stamps and welfare caused this?

No not at all. The government apparatus that incentivizes women on support to stay single, that can arbitrarily taken children and take any support at a whim is part of it. Mostly it is the leaders who promise them support and solutions while ignoring their needs and doing nothing that actually would help them.
Why are there generations of people who live in poverty on government subsistence? Do you think they like it or are stupid??? NO THEY HAVE BEEN LED ASTRAY and given poor to non existent education no hope no real investment. The so called progressives who "feel their pain" are bull shit artists who care nothing for anything but being re-elected and holding on to power.
    They are the real cause.

Ok, I can see how that could be a problem for some, but government assistance doesn't really give you a good life. I drew unemployment once and all it did was make me try harder to find another job.
