Back to the main topic. You would think that since we are at war, we would cut funding in other areas. Bush just signed a $300B spending fund on crap. Money going to change the name of a bridge, learning about catfish in Alabama, tons of other stupid $h1t. Hey how bout we focus all our efforts on the war and get the job done and come home? Rums, needs to stop cutting corners and put his money where his big mouth is. Send the F'n armor now you schmuck.

    i don't watch CNN :thumb:

Sorry, I didn't really mean to sound like I was putting words in your mouth.
My point was that I was guessing where you were coming from and I guess
    I was wrong.
From where you were coming from I thought you didn't have a problem with
a reporter making the news instead of reporting such as enforcing his agenda.

I agree with you that this should be no big deal, troops should be allowed to ask questions but it is a big deal when reporters quit reporting the news and
start making it, this troubles me...
    Whats Next?

I don't watch CNN, I watch MSNBC on occasion and mainly watch Fox News.
I have a 3 year old and a wife, a job and a computer and these things keep
    me pretty busy.

I assure you we are a big enough country that we can do other things besides the war in Iraq.
I don't know about the bridges and catfish but i'm sure we are taking care of
    more important things also.

Focus our efforts on the war?

We've been sending armor for months if not years now.
Just how many people need to do this before we get in each others way trying to fix things and create more problems?

We've been involved with 2 wars at once before I'm sure we're doing just fine. :thumb: :usaflagwa

Look I am not a democrat or a Republican I am for the best person. I could give a poop about Terry Bowden and the D party. I am for whom ever gets our troops out of Iraq the fastest while getting the job done. F the media, I know they only report what sells. Moore and Hollywood, it's all about getting laid (just like the peace core) I think Moore makes those movies for one reason. That reason is money. He can however raise some interesting points about Bush and the rest of the world but again it's all about the green backs w/ Moore. The same thing goes for Bowling for guns or whatever that movie was about. Our troops are in that world. Watch what happens on Jan. 30 when Iraq tries to elect a leader. All hell is going to break loose.

I see your trying to back up your leaders but that was 8 months ago, a lot can change in 8 month S to the DMan. They may have sent armor back then but we need it now. Come on; just admit that the solders question was right on time.

Like I said earlier in this thread.
I don't have a problem with the soldier asking a question, my problem is
because this wasn't the soldiers question.
Sadly the soldier didn't ask his own question, he asked the reporters who has
done this to further his agenda.

When a reporter becomes the news instead of reporting it, it is a problem

That link was to show that we have been sending armor to Iraq for sometime, nothing has changed, its still being sent over there today. :)

My question is more basic than whether or not the Humvees are armored.

Where are the Armored Personnel Carriers?

A Humvee is a souped up jeep. The finest light military truck in the world. Originally only a few were armored, mostly for military police involved in riot control. Bolt-on Humvee armor is marginal at best. They have great big windows and a vulnerable engine compartment. They were intended for use by paratroopers and light infantry in airborne deployments, a job they are well suited for.

But in an urban guerilla insurgency their shortcomings are apparent. Most experienced counter-insugency forces (Israelis, South Africans, British) use armored cars with 6 to 8 huge wheels and with much heavier, integral armor and no windows.

The US Army and Marines own over 20,000 APC's ranging from the Bradley Combat Vehicle to the Marines Light Attack Vehicle to the thousands of ordinary M-113's left over from Vietnam and the Cold War. These vehicles are already armored and carry more troops than the Humvee much more safely.

Why are we fighting this war with big jeeps instead of light tanks? Especially since we have enormous stocks of them sitting in depots around the world. I imagine it's for the same reason most of our heavy tanks have been withdrawn. Political correctness, maybe. Humvees are less threatening to civilians than tracked vehicles with big guns. Or economics. Humvees are a lot cheaper than APCs since neither can stand up to a RPG hit or a really big IED. Unfortunately they are getting our troops killed and wounded.

    Over 10,000 casualties so far.

I would have no problem with all the government's money going to defense, but we've reached the point of no return in the social programs area. The country can continue to fund the war and domestic issues- it's not a problem. Funding has been cut in many areas, they were large cuts in the shrimp spending bill.

They could pass a billion dollar spending bill everyday and there would still be the same problem. It's not the money, it's the production.

I loved Rumsfeld's answer, he's no politician and that's comforting. He's gave a realistic, truthful answer. I agree with lsugrad (I think it was him) the media is blowing this way out of proportion. People can't seem to understand a straight answer. They complain when they don't get one and complain when they do.

That's an interesting question. I would like that to be asked to Rumsfeld. I don't think it's the cost, if we already have so many produced then I don't see the cost being too high. Unless they would plan on reproducing them at a much faster rate. Transporting them from all over the world could be costly, both with time and money. Tanks are used in major battles. It could be threatening to have a huge tank driving down the street when all they are doing is patrolling. Maybe they think this could cause more opposition? Either way like you said men are dying while patrolling in the jeeps so something has to be done. They obviously think armoring all the humvees is the best option.

I myself have a problem with reporters making news, but for two reasons this case does not bother me. I think it is because:
    1) The soldier still had free will and did not have to listen to the reporter and
    2) Because many soldiers applauded the question, so I am glad it happened. I care about them first and foremost, and ethical reporting questions second.

From my understanding Rumsfeld said they had 18 of them in Washington DC that he would see to sending over. If that is the case, they should have been there already and it should not have taken this incident to make that happen. I am a big supporter of the GOP and think the job they are doing is heads and tails above what a democrat would do. However, reading this kind of story does piss me off, b/c it is not Michael Moore fabricating lies. These are our American Heroes and they do deserve better. It is no coincidence that the military favors the GOP in voting by a large margin every single election, however I do not have blinders on and can see that they (along with dems) need to provide our troops with the latest and greatest technology, and that technology is not scrap metal. There is plenty of blame to go around, but the time is now to get their ass in gear and stop pussyfooting around.
