His career might not be over...Sylvester McGrew of Alcorn State suffered a similar injury his senior year in the SWAC, and he came on like gangbusters as a rookie wideout for the KC Chiefs, before suffering another career threatening injury...He's still rehabbing, but Big Ben isn't over and out... Faneca's had knee problems, and so has Mawae, and Schlereth's knee looked like the inner workings of a Deadbolt door lock by the end of his retirement... To say that his career is over is premature. It is, though, at the very least, career-threatening. His LSU career, though, is quite possibly over and done with. We won't see a better combination of leadership, physical dexterity, cerebral awareness, and the ability to translate between the two ever again. Without question, a class act, an LSU legend, and someone who left LSU better than he found it. Salud, Big Ben!
That guy has definitely had his fair share of knee problems. I hope its not as bad as everyone is expecting.
I didn't see the play, so I can't comment on whether anyone went low, but a majority of the time, it's an offensive lineman who uses the now infamous "cut block" that the Denver Broncos specialize in (anyone wonder why no matter the back, they always rush for 1,000+ yards per season? Take a look at how many want to aggressively sell out against the run on opposing defensive lines when they know that the Broncos will actively attempt to end their careers on each and every play in order to succeed, all while staying within the rules of the NFL?). I will say this, I watched their tight end cut block on several occassions, and their left tackle, I believe # 71, has not been made aware that grabbing onto someone's jersey and pulling them away from the play and/or tackling them during the play is illegal in the game of organized football. In a related story, the officials in charge of the game haven't heard that his behavior is illegal in the game of organized football, either.
Somebody just rolled on it. Nothing dirty. After the game he had on an inflatable cast and I was encouraged to see him walking on his own and putting weight on the left leg. We shall see. Sucks for him but it creates an opportunity for someone else to excel.
It definetely wasn't a cheap shot on Ben, but a RB from Vandy took a real dirty dive at one of Kyle Williams knees. Williams blew by the center, who then grabbed onto his jersey and the RB tried to take out his knee. I believe they called a penalty on the play, but I'm not sure if they called the hold or the illegal block.
Walking away after a knee injury isn't uncommon. I tore up my knee horribly in a cheerleading accident my junior year of high school. My orthopedic surgeon (who was also an LSU team doctor of the time, operating on Eric Andolsek and Harvey Williams) thought I was okay. After a four-hour reconstruction, his first words to my parents were, "At least she'll walk again." But I got up and walked away after the initial injury. God Bless Big Ben. Knee injuries are awful. I'd choose a broken bone any day over a joint injury.
