A while back there was a website posted on here that listed the 40 times of players in college compared to their actual time at the NFL combine. there were some pretty wide gaps between the unofficial times in college (such as kevin jones running a 4.3 at VT and a 4.6 at the combine) and the combine time.
I didn't see it, but that's not surprising. A lot of players keep their times in college that they ran in HS so Jones probably did run a 4.3/40 at one time, but gained weight and slowed down. I imagine that his HS coach was a little more libereal with the stopwatch than the NFL is as well. I know that Bradie James ran 4.4 in HS, but I think a 4.6/40 at Pro Day? It happens...
I seriously doubt Bradie James ever ran a legit(electronically timed) 4.4/forty. These HS forty times along with accurate height & weight measurements are so rediculous sometimes that it isn't even funny. Damn near every WR or DB in the Rival's database is listed with a 4.5 or better. I'd be willing to bet that more than half of those kids' times aren't legit. Better to judge them on the field with someone chasing after them IMO.
Bradie James ran about a 3.9 in the Cotton Bowl, when he was the only guy on the field that could catch Roy Williams. Not many guys have ever caught that dude from behind, and James tracked him down like a puma.
He still didn't run a 4.5 at the combine or at LSU's Pro Day. That's why I said to judge them on the football field. Sometimes when you've got something tangible to chase or to run away from, you can find that extra gear.
Actually.. alot of those times are correct... most college football players actually slowdown over the course of their college career because of the mass that they add.
i hear clarret's 40 time at the combine was WAY slow. that's good for him...he doesn't deserve to ever play football again...same thing w/ mike williams
How come every year only 2-3 guys at the combine run a legit 4.3 forty. I have a hard time believing they've peaked out during HS. These kids are working out with some of the best S&C coaches in the world. To think that they do not get faster during college is naive. Look at the top sprinters in the world. They are as muscular as any football player in the NFL. They were fast in HS, got faster in college, & got even faster as pro athletes. Your argument is not correct IMO.
i'm not defending either stance, but muscular!=massive. you can be a lot more muscular than someone twice your size. in football, muscularity is generally not nearly as important as mass. however, there are also a lot of cases like broussard, in which the player actually drops weight to increase speed.
I'm not sure what he ran but I remember that Brady James had a faster time in the 40 for the combines than Demetrius Hookfin. I believe we all commented on how this explained alot.
