What is the best way to use this game as a tune up for Auburn..? First off, take advantage of the mobility of our QB's. If Russell is gonna be the man, I'd like to see Randall come in for special situations/plays. Maybe he can play a "Slash" type role. He could start at running back for alot of schools, so i think he could be affective in other ways than starting QB. Personally, i thought he was gonna have a hell of a season this year, but saturday was more of the same. He is just too damn streaky. Secondly, i want to see LSU throw the ball 60 times in this game. Let each QB have a half, let them throw til they cant lift their arms. Our QB's and recievers need to get some work in game situations. Beating up on Ark. St. will be good practice. We know that we can run the ball on those boys, so whats the point? We wont be able to run on Auburn if we cant pass. Last, but not least, keep up the work on defense. I thought, except for a few missed tackles at really bad times, the defense looked good, especially kyle williams. There were definately coverage holes on blitzes, so the defense needs to work on their coverage and getting to the qb faster on blitzes.
Russell plays 3 quarters, Randall gets mop up duty to get his confidence back up so that he can be the backup. The defense will be fine. If anything, this defense will be as good or better than last years team. OSU did have a good offense. The conditions also hindered us from being aggressive effectively.
What about Flynn? He needs some snaps in a real game. Arkansas State is one of the worse teams in D1AA in a class with ULM. If the Tigers are going to play a good OOC team early in the season like OSU they should schedule a patsy like A State as the first game. I say Russell plays the first half plus the first series in the second half. Then Randall plays the 3rd quarter and Flynn the 4th. LSU should have a comfortable lead by halftime so I don't know if any mop up duty consisting primarily of handing the ball off to the running backs is going to do anything for Randall's confidence but when Flynn enters the game I would like to see him operate the full scope of the offense no matter how big a lead LSU has. Another scenario is that if LSU has about a 21 point lead by early in the second quarter that Randall enters the game to drive the nail into the Indian's coffin and then Russell plays the first couple of series in the second half and then Flynn finishes out the game. Keep the rest of the first string offense in the game for the first two possessions that Flynn plays. I know that will look like Nick is running up the score but Flynn needs some experience under real conditions operation the full offense and Russell needs all the playing time he can get in order to be ready for the SEC schedule. Only 13 days remain before the Tigers have to go on the road to face Auburn. I'm not worried about the defense but the offense and especially the QBs and WRs need all the experience they can get in order to mesh as a cohesive unit.
I agree about the passing thing. If we can't pass in this game we're sitting ducks. The defense, however good, was not great, in my opinion. The only time they managed to sack, so it seemed, was when they had an all-out blitz.
BengalB, I would normally say that would be a great plan, but after what happened and the fact that we need to have Russell in this game as long as possible, I just don't see it happening. I really don't think Flynn will play. If we had Miss. St. next week, then I would say yes. But Russell has to be as prepared as he can be against a tough Auburn defense on the road. 3 quarters.
Ideally Russell would play at least 3 quarters. I don't know what Saban's plan is but this is a game where LSU could easily be ahead by 35 or more by halftime. Yesterday Missouri had a 21-0 lead over the Indians before 10 minutes were gone in the first quarter. After last nights performance against the Beavers you can bet your last dollar that Saban will have the Tigers ready for Shock and Awe.
Uhm... Correct me if I'm wrong, but last time I checked we didn't have any 1AA teams scheduled this year... Though those 2 probably should be...
lets use the game as a stepping stone to where we want to be as a team, lets not use it as a tune up, lets just"go out there to compete, execute and play like a team for 60 minutes" lets not worry about auburn, auburn is two weeks away, worry about arkansas state (not much to worry about but if we go out there and execute our gameplan, correct our mistakes from last week, we can improve as a team and get ready for the next stepping stone to the top
