One of the things from last nights show that bothered me was drama pandering by the tide because of the tragic tornadoes. It just smacked of poor me we want to win to make the folks feel better...C'mon its sad but its just a tornadoe. Hurricanes Earthquakes and yes tornadoes happen all the time.....I wonder what the over and under is on how many times we will have to hear this sob story exploited by ESPN and Alabama Football over this sad event? :geaux:
The tragedy in Tuscaloosa is unlaughable, but the knob-bobbing attention that Saban and co. Are getting courtesy of espn is.
I thought the same thing but I kept thinking God forbid they see anything close to something like Hurricane Katrina.
Well, that's what everyone thought of us and Katrina. I didn't watch it, so I don't know how bad it was...but if you don't want to give sympathy, that's fine but it doesn't mean they don't deserve it. The media always loves a feel good story, so it shouldn't be too unexpected.
There are some significant differences between Katrina and the Tuscaloosa tornados that earn the Gumps some respect in my eyes. First, while Katrina gave NOLA 2 days of warning (that some ignored), the Tuscaloosa tornado came with pretty much none. Everybody knew that bad weather was on the way, but you never really prepare for that bad an experience coming from a cold front when hurricanes are hyped endlessly. Nobody had the chance or reason to get out of the way of the tornado, while NOLA experienced the largest peacetime evacuation in US history (and yet, it still wasn't enough.) Second, while Katrina had much more widespread devistation (by 1000+x), the damage in Tuscaloosa was less than a mile from campus. One infamous video of the tornado was taken from Bryant-Denny Stadium. Its about the same as if a tornado had a path that went from Tigerland to Acadian Thruway. In Katrina, BR was mostly spared, which is why the LSU campus was so important for the rescue phase of the storm. Most of the events of Katrina were seen on TV sitting beside family that had evacuated NOLA. I guess my point is that neither Tuscaloosa nor NOLA should get into a "pity party" misery contest. Lots of people were hurt, and those of us who remember how bad Katrina was should (and pretty much do) have compassion for the Gumps, and vice-versa. That said, playing for an external motivation like this can become a real burden if a game starts to turn against you. Look at how R-Kansas wilted in the second half of their game against us. GEAUX TIGERS
and there are those who consider Katrina "overblown" maybe we should back away from the hate long enough to realize that tragedy has many forms. i suspect those who lost everything due to those tornados are deserving of any help that comes their way. those who suffered through the horror of katrina should understand this better than others. i'm having trouble with your characterization of their "sob story". Hate on the Crimson Tide all you want but worrying that somehow LSU will be penalized as a result of sympathy towards the tornado victims? go buy some aluminum foil and make a hat.
This topic is a huge middle rail. Fact is that was a tremendous tragedy and a football game means nothing compared to that. Yes we have also suffered by natural disasters, many kids on our team are still effected as well as many of us. Heck I had to move to Texas ;-) But to "compare" disasters I think is wrong. I think it is an immense tragedy and has little to do with a football game. yes for 4 hours on a field we are enemies but at the end of the day we are fellow southeners. I would leave this stuff to the Bama fans who come here and call our state and people toilets, etc I prefer to take the high road.
difdiference between Katrina and the Tuscaloosa tornados I would say there is one major difference between Katrina and the Tuscaloosa tornados . For days people in New orleans knew about it . The State and local govenments did a bad job getting people out of harms way. Over in Mississippi , people jsut began to rebuild , New orleans did what with the money ?? if you stay do not blame anyone cept you . Tornados don't give much warning , and there is no place to Geaux (Go) If another storm like Katrina comes along what would be the best thing to do? The time when Katrina hit , there were buses that could have moved people to safety why did that not happen ? The red cross was there wanting to help but were told they could not . Why ?? The tornados happened this season , Katrina all should be over that . There has been millions spent on that where did it go ? New Orleans should hasve been moved 15 to 30 miles inland .
