why not just buy the book, unless those things are internet ready and you can purchase books on it and download them, without having to leave the comfort of your own home, then that would be interesting. isn't it weird how technology is facilitating our laziness as a people.
thats exactly what i mean. the library will loan me free ebooks over the internet. they are downloaded on to the sony reader and i have a few weeks to read them before they are automatically "returned". and loaned to someone else. the only problem is that the selection of ebooks is more limited than the physical selection. i do not like to buy books. i dont want to own them, they are bulky and i live in new york and have a relatively small apartment. and i read alot. i get most books from the library across the street. they do interlibrary loan from like 100 other NYC libraries and therefore have everything i can possibly imagine and i can reserve books online and pick them up a few yards from my house for free. it takes under a minute, because checkout is automated. owning physical media like books or dvds or cds seems pointless to me. there are a few exceptions like vinyl albums or books that are really beautiful or need to be read regularly. but for a normal book that you only read once, i hate owning it. seems more efficient to borrow it than to buy it and then trash it.
like i said above. i believe. it. just as technology can advance things for the good, it can also advance stupidity. if people read books while driving, the kindle or e-reader is just the next step in that.
money spent on books isnt pissed away. reading makes you smart. and then you can express yourself beautifully and women like you more. no. the dude just wanted to say something interesting and mildly relevant so he made up the kindle part. 10% chance it was true.
I like to read and I don't read one thing at a time. Usually I'm reading a few things concurrently. I like my Kindle because everything I'm currently reading is with me all the time and in a very small footprint. Imagine having 3 books, 2 magazines, a newspaper, the Bible, the Quaran, all in your hand (about the size of a small notepad) when you're waiting (at the airport/DMV/doctors office/wherever). Now I use Kindle on my iPhone as well. And they talk to each other so that I can read on either one and my place in the book(s) remains up to date. It's very cool if you like to read and you are on the go a lot. If you aren't an avid reader, it is truly money thrown away and the library is a much better option.
They are internet ready and you can buy ebooks from amazon and other places anywhere. If i remember right, they have a builtin 3g device --Amazon Whispernet using EVDO/CDMA AnyDATA wireless modem. Only problem is that Amazon can remotely delete books off of the kindle that you have legally purchased. Look up the Animal Farm and 1984 incident from last year.
Most of the books for Kindle run between 2 and 10 bucks. The thing is also easier to handle than a book, much easier to read with one hand without a book trying to close on you. You push a button and the next page appears. And you order the book and 2 minutes later you are reading it. I like it very much. Selections just need to grow a bit.
