"Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry issued a statement before Cheney's address, saying 'most voters don't know that [Bush and Cheney] are standing against major police organizations and breaking their promise to renew the assault weapons ban -- which helps keep military-style assault weapons out of the hands of criminals and terrorists."

I ask . . . will an assault weapons ban really keep them out of the hands of terrorists and criminals? Since the ban has been in place for, I don't know how long, and it still seems that terrorist and criminals still have access to them and will use them. While not renewing the ban will make it easier to access the assault weapons, it will not deter any criminals and terrorists from obtaining and using them.

The perception of what is or isn't an assault weapon is based purely on the cosmetics of the weapon's design. An AR-15 or and AK-47 is no more lethal than the average deer hunting rifle since it has been illegal since the 1930s to possess fully automatic weapons. Kerry and his crowd of gun grabbers want to make it illegal to buy or possess any weapon that has a "military look" I own an AK-47 and a Chinese made SKS. If either of them were capable of firing in fully automatic mode like their military counterparts they would already be illegal to possess in that form in the USA.

The use of so called "assault weapons" is a very negligable percentage of all crimes committed with guns. The attempt to ban these legitimate firearms is just more of the "feelgood" legislation that liberals think will convince the public that they are doing something to stop crime.

I don't own an "assault weapon" as defined but if I wanted to own, collect, shoot for sports are do anything else with one why shouldn't I have to right to do so.

Criminals and terrorist break laws not law abididng citizens. What is so hard for libs to see that the only peopel who care about these laws are people who don't want there rights infringed on. And it has to start somewhere they won't go after your Glocks or Sigs etc. They will tax ammo out the yazoo and other things as long as the populace buys into it and not until. Alcohol got accepted this way and cigaretts are going away this way.

Even if you are not a gun owner carefully decide who you want to back and why.

yea......I disagree with our future president on this topic big time. we have a right to own guns, leave it be already. if terrorists and criminals want to get guns, they will get them no matter what.

I don't know if any of you saw this last week but there was an amendment to the state constitution under consideration declaring it each Louisiana citizen's right to "hunt, fish and trap."
