The team was addressed, and the gameplan that will be called against Georgia will be even more aggressive than compared to Arkansas... On defense, LSU will bring it like usual...You dance with who brung ya on that side of the ball. Also...for later on down the road... The only thing that makes Mauck want to come back is the season we're having. He is still undecided at this point. Don't be surprised by an initial two quarterback rotation in 2004 if Mauck doesn't return. Going with a rotation until one presents a hot hand. I don't necessarily agree with this if it happens, but then again, I'm not the coach... Russell-Physical freak, unlimited potential. Flynn-Stronger armed, more explosive version of Mauck. Flynn has the mental grasp of the playbook already. Russell will be hard to sit down because of his freakish physical talents. I trust the crystal ball where this came from, so fire away...
Good to see you did not bitch about no mention of Marcus Randall in that post. I think LSU will be in very good hands if it is Flynn or Russell at QB. And don't forget, we wil have the SEC's (and possibly NCAA's) best WR corp next year.
Mesquite...Do you remember the part where I said, "I don't necessarily agree with this..."? Just joking... The bottom line is those two guys are just too talented not to allow them to go ahead and take control of the offense here and now (or should I say in 2004 here and then?). Whomever wins the battle-eventually-will have my support. I will still be high on Marcus Randall, and totally supportive of him as well. Look no further than the Cleveland Browns, the Houston Texans, the Miami Dolphins, the Oakland Raiders, the Denver Broncos and the Baltimore Ravens as teams who went all the way down to the 3rd quarterback on their depth chart at certain points this season. There is still an opportunity for Marcus to have an impact on LSU's successes, whether on the field leading the team, or off the field at practice showing those guys the ropes...He's a team player, and he's been a great example for LSU so far during his tenure in Tiger Town.
Nope, Texican...You've got it wrong... Matt Mauck came into school as a RS freshman the same age as seniors and the 5th year seniors. They've all graduated now. He's 24, and he doesn't relate as well to his teammates. There isn't any bad chemistry, it's just a lack of it off the field for Matt. I think he feels the age gap, and he sees the camraderie, and misses the way it once was when he had people on the team his age to identify with. A simple peer association problem. I can identify with him totally, and I understand his wishy-washiness. Mauck longs to start a family. I understand that as well. Chris Wienke won a national title at FSU, and he had the same problem, only more magnified. The difference is, Wienke was even more mature than Mauck is now, coming in as a 26 year old FRESHMAN. He also had another huge advantage... He went home to a ready made family, complete with a wife and a child. Mauck is feeling the tugs of wanting to start a life...I can identify and relate, totally.
Texican...I spoke with someone last night who is close to the situation...I said that I trusted the crystal ball...You do not, and you for some reason find it odd that a young man with no lifelong connection to our school as you do somehow doesn't see the importance of football at our school... Funny, but coming out of high school, he didn't see that importance, either. That's why he didn't come back to Saban till 2000. You're talking about a guy who appreciates, but doesn't necessarily identify LSU football with the same passion you do. You're talking about a guy who appreciates, but doesn't necessarily LIKE football. He already chose something else over it once when he chose baseball. What makes you think he's such a die-hard football guy that he would sacrifice it all and the things he wants and deserves for something YOU feel important? You call melodrama this guy being away from any friends and family, and wanting to settle down and start work towards life and a family of his own...Yet you turn him not wanting football as badly as you do into a melodrama...The irony is quite interesting, here. You have it wrong, my friend. Sorry you don't appreciate it, bub.
Texican you need to chill out. TE was right on the money. Mauck is engaged and wants to make a smart decision. If he chooses not to come back, I will support his decision. Mauck is a great person first and foremost. He just happens to be a great person who plays football. He is concerned with his life. Football is nothing more than a game.
While I completely agree with TE, I am not sure if the whole thing is wrapped up. I think the best possible scenario would be that of Mauck coming back and then letting Flynn and Russell have a year where they can get some playing time in...And then, when they are sophomores and a year more mature, one of them making their starting debut...
There is another aspect to Mauk's decisions as well. He is on the practice field every day with Flynn and Russell and he has a very good perception of their abilities. If he were going to take a shot at the NFL he might consider that he would do better to come out this year as a starter leading (or near the top) of the SEC in efficiency etc rather than as a backup to either or both Flynn and Russel. Even without the pro angle if the writing is on the clubhouse wall that these guys are going to be in the saddle next year it might weigh heavily on his decision to go ahead with his post graduate education. He would sure have a better read on this than anyone outside the team. I hope he stays even if he does not finish the season as the starter next year. He will have the rest of his life to do the other things, but he will find after it is gone that the days he finds himself in now will never, ever, come again. I loved college and LSU. 4 years for a BA, 2 years for a MA, and 4 years for a JD... that was 10 years and they said I had to start paying back all that money I had borrowed.. Heck, if I win the lottery I will go back again to LSU to be a Rocket Scientist or whatever else they will let me back in for. And if I had had the chance to come out of that tunnell..
TE, I love how this newbie poster is on here acting like a complete ass. So glad to have you on tigerforums Texican!
