I think Jai Eugene has made remarkable improvement this season. He even has a swagger on the field, and is probably our best run defender as far as DBs go. The kid can ball. He wasn't highly touted for nothing. LSU in tremendous shape at the DB position in the foreseeable future. That's scary good. Now, if we can keep our depth at D-line and strengthen our LB corps, they will continue being a championship caliber defense for years to come.
I agree with the LB comment. Our DL and DBs are way past solid. Hopefully we can recruit, sign, and develop some stud LBs. Maybe take some recruited safeties and convert them. Thats what Jimmy Johnson did at Miami. With our DL, we could afford to have a 210-215 lb LB. Its not like we have to have 245 lb guys at every LB position. Give me some players that have good speed and like to hit.
Jai had problems last year because he did not know when to look back toward the ball and he'd get cheap pass interference penalties, or the QB would underthrow the ball intentionally and burn him on the receiver coming back to the ball. But he's since fixed the problem. That's a common problem for young DB's, primarily because a lot of these kids (Jai included) don't play DB in high school.
That part is definitely true. He has better technique and awareness in tackling, especially tackling WR's for short gains. I'm still not sure if he is there as a one-on-one CB though
Whatever his problems were, its GREAT to see them corrected and him playing so well. Its a huge shot in the arm for the defense.
I have to admit that our pass defense scares me. Two mediocre SEC quarterbacks have had success against us. Hope we improve as the season progresses. Just my two cents. But I agreee that Jai is playing better than last year.
i have to agree with you here, Eugene has been a beast so far. He has played well against some decent receivers and the run. But you left out, Jackson and Calhoun.
The breakdowns in the secondary seem to be more the fault of the safeties and not so much the cornerbacks.
