According to Smoke at his PC this evening, Determan will start game 6 if he's not used in the game against NWST. Is this a good move in the eyes of Tiger nation?
I say you start Dirks... take it one game at a time. Starting Detes, you lose him in relief of the following game. But if we start Dirks tommorow and he goes deep into the game... Detes can optimally pitch only one inning and be fine to start the do or die game 7. With Smoke's idea... we will have to use Detes for about 4 Inning, followed by probably Ramirez and Faircloth... then if we win that game with our pieced together staff, we have to have Dirks basically pitch an entire game, with only tired arms that can relieve. Game 5: Ramirez 3 IP most likely to finish up Game 6: Dirks 6-7 IP likely but can go deeper, Determan to close 1 IP Game 7: Determan 4 IP followed by English 3-4 IP and then Faircloth 1-2 IP at least that what I would plan on if I were coach... Under Smoke it would go... Game 5: Ramirez 3 IP Game 6: Determan 4 IP, English 3-4 IP, Faircloth 1-2 IP Game 7: Dirks ... basically a complete game... I just don't see this as the smartest decision, but maybe i just dont know baseball.
I doubt we have to play 2 1/3 of a game tommorow... so I guess Determan could get a nights rest and be fine to close on Tuesday... but I don't know, thats why they pay Smoke the big bucks.
I still say its iffy considering that they still have Eddie Degerman who is one of there 3 big starters. Why doesnt LSU pitch Dirks to counter with one of there own big 3? But, if it pans out, you have Dirks pitching against a committee effort of Rice. The risk though is facing a guy with an ERA under 3 with a guy (determan) who hasnt started a game all year. Personally, I say go with Dirks to face Degerman and then go committee vs. Committee in game 7 if it gets there.
Well, if we cant score guys that get on base, it wouldn't matter if I pitched for the Tigers. Pitching is a strategy and I can see the strategy on both sides, but if we dont start putting bat to ball consistently ie stop popping out, hitting grounders into DP and just plain whiffing, then we wont get past game 6.
I agree. LSU has not hit good pitching This year. Degerman is a good pitcher. Even in this series, LSU didnt hit the ACE of Marist's staff. Early in the game today they couldnt seem to get big hits against a guy that had like 4 4 pitch walks to start innings. The LSU method of keep it close for the first 6 then roughing up the bullpen wont work against Rice. Atleast not 2 games in a row.
I find it highly unlikely that Smoke would seriously name a game 6 starter at this point considering the fact that the Northwestern St. game has yet to be completed and won.
Well Grad he said it at his PC when the game was called. He said if Determan doesnt pitch in the NWST game in relief, he'll start game 6.
Are they planning all three games to be played tommorow ? If so, thats a dumb****ing move. If we are going into Tuesday, then I can see why.
