Is Ole Miss (football) really top 5?

I am not intimately familiar with this Ole Miss team. But...Ole Miss top 5? I find it hard to believe. Houston Nutt is definitely a good college coach. They have a tried and tested QB. But top 5?????

BTW, I'm not just bad-mouthing Ole Miss. Although, that is my usual state of being.

Can someone who knows Ole Miss well give me a clue as to whether or not I am way off base thinking top 5 is a stretch?

Yes, they absolutely are top 5 in the conference.

I say rank 'em high. Their fans act so pathetically in the face of any shred of success that I would enjoy nothing more than the inevitable fall from grace.

I had my ole miss friends in the weekend for baseball. They honestly believe that they are the team to beat in the west. I asked him for an honest prediction and he told me a sugar bowl win. And this is maybe the grounded sec fan I have met. He all but guarenteed me that they would
    Beat LSU.

    Are they better than:

    Oklahoma
    Texas
    Florida
    USC
    Ohio State

    even...

    LSU
    Va Tech, etc?

No, they arent a top five team.

They're really just a trendy pick since they finished out the year strong...not unlike UGA in 2007. They waxed a vastly overrated and unphyiscal TxTech in the bowl game, and that's all that anyone seems to remember right now. They've got some good players, to be sure. But they've got a long way to go before they're top 5 worthy.

Ole Miss is going to be good this year. They have the best quarterback in the West (maybe in the league), they have some talent, and they play hard under a very good, experienced coach. But it's Ole Miss and they still have a lot to prove to me as far as consistency from year to year. They just haven't amounted to much in 40 years.

Sounds like the classic story of "who's coming back" and "what happened in your bowl game". I think that Ole Miss will be a Top 25 team this year for sure, but I'm surprised to see them in people's Top 10 lists ahead of LSU.

Their talent alone makes them Top 10.

they drop a notch---as far as how good they are, not necessarily their record. a program like OM cant replace two of the best linemen they have ever had without a hitch.

Their QB may be the best all around QB in the league, certainly in the division. I think they will be rebuilding on the defensive side - several players graduated. I also think Nutt can get them up for games and he has been pretty successful against LSU.
It would be a mistake to overlook them just because they haven't won anything is over 40 years. But I certainly don't think they are pre-season top 5.
