Colorado's Richard Lamm thinks so; http://www.scaredmonkeys.com/2005/04/25/richard-lamm-speech-on-immigration/
The democrats will have a new voting block along with the felons. This country is going to fall like the Roman Empire and we are going to witness it right in front of our eyes.
As a resident of LA County for the last five years, it has become really, really hard not to hate illegal Mexicans.
I just thought today how the legal citizens of the US have become like the royal family of the world. Most expect more than the rest of the world gets and for less effort. It makes it easy to understand why there are plenty of folks around the world jealous or begrudging of us. I don't like kids who've grown up with a silver spoon and don't appreciate it, and I imagine many around the world feel the same about US citizens. No point, just a thought I had.
No it isn't. This is no different that when the Irish were going to take over. Or the Slavs. Or the Dutch. Or any other group that imigrated here in droves. Its a bunch of alarmist non-sense. That all being said we NEED to control our borders. This is a national security issue not a cultural one.
The problem is that the majority of Mexico's wealth is owned by only a few families. If you think about it, Mexico has: 1. Vast natural resources 2. Strong culture that places importance on the family 3. Hard working, willing workforce If Mexico would stop exporting its problems, and actually had to face up to its own problems, it could be a wealthy superpower. That will not happen as long as there is the "America Option" for people who are sick of the system. If you are able to just leave and instantly obtain a better life, there is no incentive to change the system from within. The best thing Mexico could ever do for itself would be to stop the flow of illegal immigrant. Maybe not for the current generation, but for the future of Mexico.
Good points USM. One thing you left out is that Mexico has a growing middle class and a declining population growth rate. This all spells for a slow down of immigration.
The problem with Mr. Lamm's remarks is that they are not aimed at illegal aliens; they seem aimed at all immigrants. This nation is a nation of immigrants. Immigrants and their children have made enormous contributions to this country. The idea of America being a great "melting pot" is a myth. America more closely resembles a rich gumbo of different cultures, traditions and languages. But I do not believe local, state or the federal government has the responsibility to be bilingual. I do believe that legal immigrants should become American citizens if they intend to remain here and that among the requirements of citizenship should be that they learn English, American history and government.
although i think usm makes a great point, i also do not know why i do shouldnt favor virtually fre immigration. i dont feel like it is fair that people get screwed by being born in a **** country. you want to com to american nd be american, i respect that, be my guest. i would like to hear sabanfan's perspective, because i know he travels enough to know how heavy immigration is working out in different communities, including mine. the way i see it, immigration only helps america. not sure though.
