JMO. There are no "innocents" at Gitmo. The released prisoners will be back to their terrorist activities in a heartbeat with more anti-US venom than ever.

Those deported for trial will be free within months. Everybody hates us, remember? Any "trial" will be a sham.

The larger issue is that this act signifies a softening of our stance towards those who would do us harm. They will attempt to take advantage of it. Also, look for covert surveillance (wiretaps) to be curtailed so the terrorists will be communicating with impunity and if they do get caught, so what? Keep your mouth shut because the interrogations are going to be a picnic and what are they going to do? Let you rot in Gitmo? Oh wait...there is no Gitmo. Oh! Please don't toss me in that briar patch.

    Am I paranoid? Damn straight.

When we toss aside long-cherished American ideals regarding justice simply because we have the red-ass . . . then the Rags have won something. They are forcing us to fight their kind of war instead of our kind.

Guantanamo is hurting us more than it is hurting Al Qaeda. They love it that we have taken on this huge burden which reveals that we don't practice what we preach. They can find 200 radicals almost anywhere, they don't need these guys back and won't trust them if they get them back.

If we have the goods on these guys, why not try them and jail them properly?

not true. there have been some "innocents" detained for many years that are still sitting there.

Whether it was a student working his way thru school as a taxi-driver caught in the quagmire, or someone detained due to false reports by corrupt informants; its happened and they are still there.

And these innocents/non-militants have had no way to challenge their false allegations.

Ive made it clear I dont give a damn what other countries think, especially in regards to protecting our own.

Gitmo, to you and me, represents a necessary building thats a holding place for much of the scum of the earth. to many others, it symbolizes a corrupt and moral bankrupt america that defies all we are supposed to stand for; some of it being deserved.

Does it hold worthless subhumans who dont deserve the light of day? of course it does. But it also holds some who do not belong there any more than you or me.

And if doing the right thing as Americans is perceived as weakness, do we really care? In fact, Id say it should represent just the opposite. Doing whats right is mostly never easy.

And in the meantime, it ends up being a nice p.r. move.

There are some innocents but the senders wont accept the returnee's. Bush has been trying to get rid of 70 but their countries wont accept them back.

This thread and the poll is too vague.
Its like it was made from a liberal and directed at one side only.
This seems like something you would get from the liberal establishment.
This is an example of someone that could be trying to mold a poll to reach his own conclusion.

I approved of some of the things the president has done but also disapproved of quite a bit as well.
Btw, its not like we know everything that any president knows at the time he is in power.
Ones view might change with the classified information that only certain people have access too.

the only problem with that is we cannot return to sender if they are to be persecuted-- and china has said they would be more than happy to accept their motley crew.

And quicker than you could say chop suey, they'd be egg-roll filler. not that theres anything wrong with that.

If I was a country who had a possibly shady civilian detained for years, and then suddenly let go to return home, I would think he was a spy and arrest and detain him to be safe.

Even if found innocent in an American court, these guys are still in a very sticky situation.
