Bosnians Protest Ban on Santa Claus

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina — Hundreds of Bosnians have protested against a recent ban on Santa Claus in the city's kindergartens.

The directors of Sarajevo's day-care centers, kindergartens and preschools banned Santa. They argued that the capital is predominantly Muslim and Santa Claus is not part of the Muslim tradition.

A multi-religious mix of parents, children and others blew whistles on a downtown square on Sunday and requested Santa be restored to the children. Many protesters wore Santa Claus hats.

Santa is known locally as Father Frost and has given out presents to generations of Bosnian children in schools, kindergartens and other institutions. This was done even during communist rule and was always tied to New Year's celebrations. The demonstrators say that makes it a Bosnian tradition.

I've said it many times...we were stupid to help the stinking muslims in the Balkans.

PRISTINA, Yugoslavia -- An explosion ripped through a
medieval Serbian Orthodox Church in Kosovo, flattening
the structure, U.N police said Monday.

The church of the Holy Prophet Elijah was located in
the village of Pomazetin, just outside the Serb
village of Kosovo Polje. The church was leveled in the
Sunday
night explosion, said Oleg Rubezhov, a U.N. police
officer who patrols the area.

"It was destroyed to the basement," he said.

About 66 pounds of explosives were used in the 11:30
p.m. blast, peacekeepers said. Two people were seen
running from the site shortly after the explosion.

The church was not under guard by NATO-led
peacekeepers, U.N. police said.

They said it had already been severely damaged during
the war between ethnic Albanian separatists and the
forces of Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic.

However, the private Beta and FoNet news agencies in
Belgrade said in their reports that the church was
first damaged last August in a fire or by an
explosion.

The opposition Serbian Renewal Movement blamed the
latest explosion on the peacekeeping force, called
KFOR, saying its troops did nothing to prevent it
in this heavily ethnic Albanian province.

"Members of KFOR know well enough that Albanian
extremists systematically destroy Orthodox Christian
churches, but they obviously do nothing to prevent
them, which is proven by this latest crime," the party
said.

Minority Serbs have faced daily attacks over the past
year and Serb Orthodox monuments have been targeted by
ethnic Albanian militants. The Beta news agency said
86 religious objects have been destroyed.

Beta said Pomazetin was an ethnically mixed village
before Kosovo's 1998-99 war. Since the deployment of
NATO-led peacekeepers in the province last year, Serb
villagers have fled, fearing for their safety.

Such generalizations may alienate the one or two that don't want to kill us all.

I try to avoid such glittering generalities, but even the most charitable description of Islam would have to conclude that it is culturally backward, egocentric, oppressive and xenophobic.

That is a fair definition for radical fundamentalist islamists. Islam itself is just a religion.

Take Northern Ireland, for example, radical Christians commit ghastly acts of barbarism in the name of God but it isn't reflective of the religion itself -- only of terrorists who identify themselves with a religion. Same thing with the abortion clinic bombers . . . they claim to be acting in the name of God, but they are really just committing murder in their own name.

The Bosnians are just not really bright. Santa Claus is not a Christian figure.

That's a rather broad generalization. I found the Serbs, for the most part, to be very good people. I feel very sorry for them and the hand they have been dealt.

Also...

It is well known that the name "Santa Claus" comes to us by way of the Dutch "Sinter Klaas," which in turn, was a form of Saint Nicholas. Our modern Santa Claus took his name from the Christian Saint Nicholas so we need to begin with a look at this Christian bishop of the fourth century.

Throughout history Nicholas of Myra (d. 350) has been one of the most beloved saints even apart from the Santa Claus context. In fact, George McKnight claims that both in the eastern and western Church, Nicholas is "the object of extreme veneration, to a degree unequaled in the case of any other saint."

The first historical record of his veneration is the fact that the emperor Justinian built a church in his honor in Constantinople around the year 540.

Nicholas is the patron saint of entire nations, including Greece, Russia, Sicily, and Lorraine, and many cities throughout Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Holland, and Italy. He is also patron saint of children, bakers, merchants, and mariners.

Santa Claus in America
When the Dutch established their colony of New Amsterdam in America in the seventeenth century, they brought with them the traditional "visit" from Sinter Klaas (St. Nicholas) on the eve of Dec. 5. Weiser thinks that when the English later took over the colony and renamed it New York, the English children began longing to have a kindly "Sinter Klaas" of their own that would bring them gifts. But because the English Protestants did not observe saints days, the Sinter Klaas visit was moved to Christmas Eve and observed then.

There is universal consensus that the person most responsible for shaping the American version of Santa Claus is Dr. Clement Clark Moore, a theology and classics professor at Union Seminary. What did Moore do to earn this honor? He wrote a simple poem for his children in 1822 entitled, "A Visit from St. Nicholas," that begins with the now famous words,

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In the hope that St. Nicholas soon would be there.

Before Rome brought Christianity to Europe, the old pagan winter solstice feasts were the principle holidays and they were later incorporated into Christmas. "Father Frost", decorated trees, yule logs, and other familiar traditions came from this heritage of pagan sources, not from Christian ones.

Jewish merchants in 20th century America further embraced Santa Claus as a way to decorate and celebrate the Christmas season in their stores without all the "baby Jesus" imagery interfering with their own religious beliefs. It's why "Happy Holidays" is supplanting "Merry Christmas", too.
