I remember reading that Norm Chow declined the HC job at BYU. I think he was offered that job but wanted to remain OC for them.

I could be wrong, I just think I recall reading that a while back but I didn't (heh..at the time) think it mattered much so it isn't firm in my memory.

Seems to me he is in a great position, and not really eager to prove himself to anyone. I get the feeling he is a genius guru who is just waiting for the right job to open up. I would love to give him a shot if he was interested - I know he is a 100% classy individual who gives off a vibe of total repsect.

Check out this preview I found on ESPN from '01 - the year Chow was hired.

    http://espn.go.com/ncf/preview01/s/chow.html

In 18 seasons as offensive coordinator, Chow coached six of the top 12 career passing efficiency leaders and 11 quarterbacks who rank among the top 30 in NCAA history for single-season passing yardage. The Cougars scored 30 or more points in 106 of 181 games. His list of pupils include Robbie Bosco, Steve Young and 1990 Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer.

    .....

"He is arguably the best offensive coordinator in the history of college football, certainly in terms of championships and wins and people he has coached," Carroll said. "He is not only a great attraction for us in recruiting and a great asset as a coach, but he allows me to do what I want to do."

    .....

Still, improvement is expected out of Palmer, who has yet to live up to lofty expectations in two years with USC. Last season, Palmer's 16 touchdowns were overshadowed by his 18 interceptions.

"He is the most physically talented quarterback I have ever been around," Chow said. "But he's been ragged on a bit around here, so my job is to make him believe in himself and believe in what we're doing."

    .....

While at BYU, Chow worked with not only head coach LaVell Edwards, but also a handful of talented assistants, including current Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid, Baltimore Ravens coach Brian Billick and Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren.

In 1982, it was Chow who gave an unknown Holmgren -- then the quarterbacks coach at San Francisco State -- his first big break.

    .....

    Steve Young -- 1980-83 7,733 yards, 56 TDs
    Robbie Bosco -- 1983-85 8,400 yards, 66 TDs
    Ty Detmer -- 1988-91 15,031 yards*, 121 TDs*
    John Walsh -- 1991-94 8,390 yards, 66 TDs
    Kevin Feterick -- 1996-99 8,065 yards, 53 TDs
    Steve Sarkisian -- 1995-96 7,464 yards, 53 TDs
    Phillip Rivers -- 2000- 3,054 yards, 25 TDs
    *NCAA records

Tack onto that list now Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart. Only coach in history of the world to coach 3 Heisman winning QBs. I'm telling you guys, if someone just offered him a job at a good school, he'd take it - and I believe that school will be a powerhouse for years. He has no interest in the NFL, yet he has connections that go the highest chambers of NFL coaches and players. Some school is going to be a power when he is the coach, I'd love for him to come here.

Seems we were both right about BYU Conrad - he was indeed passed over by the new administration when Lavelle left (after saying he turned down many HC jobs over the 27 years out of loyalty - go figure). Then he was contacted by BYU a couple of years ago about the HC position, and told them he was not interested ...lol serves them right after the loyalty he showed them.

This guy would be at LSU the rest of his coaching career - and one thing is certain, we would not have any problem getting QBs here ever again. We have tons of RB, WR talent to choose from in La and surrounding states, but we can never get the big time QB. We could if he came (I frankly think RP would be a cinch - nothing he wants more than Heisman, plus JR and MF would be thrilled), and he knows how to use him and our speedy backs.
