I missed the 4th qtr but this game was in hand. I can't imagine we were going to risk doing anything. This wasn't last week's coaching scared edition.
I agree. I wouldn't call it balanced, but it wasn't nearly as obvious. The play calls were much better disguised. I'd like to see a few of those passes behind the line changed to safe high percentage 10-15 yard passes, but there was no need to be slinging it deep today. The play action to the TE was beautiful, I'd throw it a few times a game. Not enough has been said about the play of the OL today. They were outstanding from start to finish. Hit a few more passes and their job would be easier. Anyone else surprised we can't successfully run a screen?
I'm not going to complain about the play calling today. Last week sucked; it was timid and totally predictable. Today there was more throwing on 1st and 10 than last week, more play action than last week, and many safe passes that should build the confidence of a young, developing quarterback. Towards the end of the game he started pushing the ball up the field, and Harris made some throws that he missed on earlier in the game. If this had been Bama in week 8, I would be concerned. But it wasn't week 8, it was week 2(3) and the play calling definitely improved from week 1(2). All we can do now is watch and see if things develop further in week 3.
The passing game can be simple and conservative but you can't have most of your passes just be screens. I think the lack of confidence in Harris is a big part of what is holding him back. He is scared to pull the trigger and make a mistake, then possibly lose his spot.
If the adage "You see the most improvement between games 1 and 2" I'd say I'm okay with it. Less penalties, not so predictable play calling. Everything was a lot closer to there than it was last week with the exception of kick coverage, someone will break one on us soon, not enough heat on the QB or Punters.
I agree with you. We need to get Harris battle tested prior to the war with Bama. LSU can't beat Bama playing Les Miles Bully ball. Hopefully, the next few games Harris will get the opportunity to put up some numbers and gain confidence. Les and Cam Newton need to go talk to Sean Payton.
I'm glad you mentioned penalties. LSU was much improved in that department. It was also nice to get a couple of turnovers. Auburn's passing gaming was dreadful. But, as many have already said, LSU we'll have to pass effectively and generate balance. For god's sake, we must beat Alabama this year! Also, if LSU can get 10 wins or more, I think Fournette will earn the Heisman. Geaux Tigers!
I know that and it still surprises me. Outstanding OL, tons of athletic RB's, still can't pull it off.
This is all any of the crew that actually knows what football looks like is asking. We took a step in the right direction today. It's not at full potential but I will take it given the circumstances of the day. It should only get better from here.
