What is the difference between the preseason ranked #7 LSU team of 1998?
The 1998 team was a total disappointment and ended up going 4-7 on the season.

I was just wondering what is different about this team, and how do they compare?

    :geauxtige LSU!

Mike Archer was not a very good coach. After his 10-win rookie season with Bill Arnspargers players he got complacent. That was also the time LSU was transitioning from a majority white team with a few blacks to a majority black team with a few whites. Both factions were about equal and Archer allowed racial discord to happen among the players and they lost focus. There were other disciplinary problems that were not addressed. Archer recruited poorly and his teams got worse.

This team has more talented players, they have the discipline instilled by Nick, and Les Miles is not a rookie coach. He has game experience, team leadership experience, and can recruit.

Pigs will fly before LSU goes 4-7 this season.

first, Lou Tepper is not coaching. Caoching really matters in college football and gerry dinardo had lost it by 1998. I think most folks think Miles will be a very good coach, and most folks know the assistants are top-notch in Pelini and Fisher. The talent is definitely there. So LSU should be ok. The 98 team's talent was over-rated.

Red55 we are talking about 1998 not 1988, and btw Red did you know Archer was doing most of the recruiting for Bill even his first year here. Bill never liked to recruit, repeat never liked recruiting.

Also Red55 from the years of 1986-1990 Louisiana didn't have much talent, name one player who left La. in those years who made 1st team AA. Also Red Archer signed almost everyone in the top 12 in La until his 90 class, which could be the weakest year in La ever. Hallman is the guy who comes in and can't sign most of the top 12, and many AA types leave the state for Miami, FSU, Michigan, Nebraska etc.

In 98 Lou's defense was the main reason for the losing season. LSU had the talent to win, and I picked them to go 8-4 or 9-3.

Lou Tepper was the worst mistake Gerry D every made. I remember games where we were all chanting "Lou must go! Lou must go! Lou must go!"

This year’s team definitely has more talent and is more mature overall. LSU has become known as a big time institution that means business. If you accept to coach here, or play here, then you know exactly what is expected of you. I think Nick Saban has proved that hard work does pay off and he has instilled that work ethic in his recruiting classes, which are the leaders of this year’s team. With that leadership, that work ethic will become contagious with the younger guys. I think the pride of putting on the purple and gold is greater than ever, and its running through every Tiger from fan to player to coach.

I think the biggest difference is that failure is no longer an option, and everyone is making sure of it.

Oops. I read 1988, another year that we were highly ranked but underperfomed, however I stand by all my criticisms of Mike Archer.

1998 was definitely a failure of Teppers defense.

Since when did the '98 team win the SEC/NC several years earlier?

You can peg, almost to the second, the beginning of the end for DiNardo from when he let Carl Reese go out of (select one) spite, envy, stupidity.

It took Mack Brown, what, about five minutes to scoop him up? Of course, Brown pulled a DiNardo in firing Reese last year.

    He canned the wrong coordinator.
