How could someone want Butch Davis at LSU? (Long)

I know all about Davis and his Miami tenure. I think he did a fantastic job at Miami.

But one thing that I can't figure out is why people would want a man like Davis at LSU when people are RAVING about how they feel Saban acted horribly in leaving LSU. People said he choose the worst time, that he is screwing over LSU with recruits, and other things.

So, let's go over what Butch Davis has done in his life-time.

Before heading off to Miami, he was known as the type of person who said one thing and did

Then let us fast-forward to where Davis screws not only the adminstration out of luck at Miami but his own players. He not only didn't tell his players that he was leaving but he didn't even tell his own coaches nor inform the adminstration that he was going until it was wayyy too late.

Heck, let us not forgot Davis not even contacting his star OL who stayed mainly because he felt Davis was going to be there for him next year.

Now lets talk about what he did at Cleveland. His record was a near joke outside of 1 playoff year and his players hated him. It's one thing to be a bad coach in the NFL and it's another to have a team utterly and completely hate you.

The day after he gets fired lets look at the quotes

With all of this said, do these sound like attributes of someone that you want running our team? Someone whom you can't trust?

    Yes, it does.

First, all this stuff about Saban betraying LSU and Butch Davis betraying Miami and Dallas is just silly. Grow up people. When people offer someone a better job making more money, they take it. Nick Saban would still be an assistant at Kent State if he went by your philosophy because he wouldn't want to betray them by leaving for a better job with more money.

And, when is a good time to leave. I think Saban could not have picked a better time. If he waited until after the bowl, there is not enough time to recover recruiting. If he does it after Feb. 2, he lied to his signees. If he does it during the season, he leaves his team when they need him most. Grow up. There is nothing with Butch Davis or Nick Saban leaving for better jobs.

Butch Davis did make mistakes at Cleveland, obviously. So what? He is a human being. Just because he could not properly manage an NFL club does not mean he is not a great coach and a great college coach and one of the best recruiters in college football history.

Where did I say Butch Davis betrayed Miami? I simply stated what a low-life he was by telling players he was staying then jumping ship one night to the Browns without even a mention.

I find it hilarious a big reason for people being so mad is that they want a stable, trustful coach and its the exact opposite of Butch Davis.

I'm with you on this one.

Why would people want a guy who has just been chewed up and spit out by the NFL and who has expressed feelings of job burnout, to come and take over one of the biggest football programs in the country. We certainly don't need an unstable, burned out coach.

I think I'll pass on Butch.

Are you talking about Butch or Spurrier? Sounds like it would describe either and I do think Spurrier will do just fine at USC.

I was originally pro Davis but the more I read about the guy, the more turned off about that possible hire I am. I am just glad that the decision isn't mine so me chestnuts don't get roasted over an open fire by the LSU faithful.

Thank you for researching this. I've noticed you were against hiring Butch from the beginning as I was, but I was too lazy to go back and find all those articles I had remembered reading. You can add to your list the fact that he was one of the worst evaluators of NFL talent (if not the worst)while he was in the league. He was just horrible. You cannot even blame it on talent scouts or GMs - because he held both positions and had final say over all draft picks.

I know he had many many NFL players drafted from his Miami team - but did he find and evaluate them? Or were they found by his assistants and he just did the persuading? I honestly don't know. All I know is his picks in Cleveland do not jive with the talented recruits he had at Miami - and we do know he did the evaluating in Cleveland (and even shunned respected talent scout Ron Wolf).

    Food for thought.

I do think he'd be a decent coach, he is a disciplinarian and organized. He is a good motivator and a good defensive coordinator that can obviously convince talented players to come to his school. I think if we hired him he would give us many 8,9,10 win seasons - I just am not sure how he will treat his players, fans, and administration. He has a long history of burning bridges.
