I think it would be the greatest damn thing in the entire friggin world if it would mean that the descendants of the slaves would finally get past it and move on.

If the feds apologize for jim crow, than they should apologize for the cruels treatment of Italian immigrants and every other nationality for that matter.

Nothing wrong with an apology, alot of countries have done this.
but you are right, they would have to apologize to the way immigrants were treated, just like they apologized to Native Americans.

    Bingo!

But it won't, so it's really just another opportunity for white guys to feel better about being white. Doesn't do much for blacks today, much less the ones that suffered under the Crow laws.

Red its a part of history, just like your family history and anything else, nobody asking to you get over it. I mean thats really the worst thing you could tell a person of color, to get over something like that. All I am asking that you be a bit more sensitive to understanding the feelings behind it. Its pretty tough to here get over it sometimes, when you have listen to story after story about how your ancestors, grandparents, and parents suffered through attacks, lynchings, and being treated less than a human by a civilized country. You understand what I am saying, I am not asking to roll out the red carpet, just be a lit bit more understanding to the plight. I could careless if they ever apologize, but saying get over it is really not helping the matter either. I look at it in a close comparison as if someone you know died in the towers and someone tells you to get over it. I mean its not a totally equal comparisons, but the feelings rail in similarities.

    Just saying, my friend.

I'm still waiting for the Vikings to apologize for the attrocities they pulled on my Welsh forefathers. I'm losing sleep over it nightly. Bastards.

Fair enough, it's part of history. Please remember that when we grumble that our Confederate-American heritage is being ignored when Confederate flags are banned and Dixie is discouraged. Our mayor here is redesigning North Boulevard and the Confederate Veterans statue is being removed. It was put up over 100 years ago by Louisiana veterans who fought for their country and their state. But now we are being told to get over it.

Actually I said get past it. Let me ask you this? Will you ever get past it? Seriously. There is not a slave now alive and there is not a slave holder now alive. How long must this suffering be prolonged? I'm not telling you to forget it, just suggesting that is shouldn't overshadow your life like some let it do.

I understand, and be aware that my glibness was not intended to be accusatory. I just think that a formal national apology should be formally accepted and be an end to it.

Former plight. Does my generation not get any credit for changing the way things were and doing what is right. Why must we apologize for the sins of others? I sympathize with your cultural frustrations, but can you also understand the frustration we feel when we seem to be held accountable for things that happened 100 years before we were born? What can we do about it? Why should we feel responsible? What good does it do to keep rehashing old evils? Wouldn't we all be better off if we moved on to whatever is next instead of grieving for the past.

White people are about to elect a black President of the United States of America. Doesn't that make you forget slavery just a little bit?

Why apologize for people who have been dead for years for what they did to people who have been dead for years? As a direct Acadian descendant, I have just as much to complain about as descendants of slaves, but since my elders never bitched about it neither did I.
