Tell us about your favorite, off the beaten path, not for tourists restaurant.

I discovered a place in Atlanta called Fat Matt's Rib Shack. It's a dump in a run down part of town, cash only but...talk about some good Bar B Que ribs. A bonus was the blues band playing live. The keyboard player was a shriveled up, 80 something year old black man. He was an original Ink Spot. Awesome.

Right next door is Fat Matt's Chicken Shack. I will have fried chicken there when I am next in Atlanta.

  2. Sounds good. Silver Moon is good but I sometimes wonder about the insanitary conditions there. I'm not a germ phobe or anything but I'd bet the behind the scenes goings-on are pretty scary there.

When I lived in N.O many moons ago there was a bar on Veterans in Metairie called the Triple Play. Pretty tough place and definitely not on any tourists agenda. I hear it is still there. Probably the best hamburger I have ever had.

Don't know if it could really be considered a "hole-in-the-wall", but compared to eating establishments like Commander's Palace, Galatoire's or Antoine's, I guess it is...Cafe Maspero in New Orleans is my hands down favorite. Lots of groceries for very little dinero.

Alex's in Midtown Memphis has the best chicken fingers I've ever had. Great late night spot, but in the middle of the ghetto. I'm also a big fan of Domilise's in New Orleans, though I guess it could be considered a tourist spot. Dunbar's on Freret has all-you-can-eat fried chicken and red beans and rice for $5 I think every day.

Graysons in Clarence, LA on Hwy 71 near Natchitoches has the best beef brisket in the state. They also bake their own buns, so their sandwiches are the best, too. Orders come in from all over for holiday smoked turkeys and hams.

Pig Stand on Hwy 167 in Ville Platte has the best pork barbecue and some pretty damn good plate lunches, too.

Leas in Lecompte. Best pies around, I like the cherry and the pecan. Damn good smoked ham, too. Its the best stop for lunch or breakfast on Hwy 71 or I-49.
