Four-star junior college cornerback Mario Stevenson made it official on Wednesday, signing with LSU. The Northeast Mississippi standout drew raves from his coach. “He’s as good as it gets,” said NECC coach Andy Greening. “I can’t say it any better than that. He had the whole nation in here after him, but LSU’s had him wrapped up for a while. Of course, they’ve got a good gig going right now, getting a lot of great players, and he’s just another one on his way.” Stevenson (6-2, 195. 4.42) capped the season with three interceptions, although opponents rarely challenged him. “He probably only had about seven or eight balls caught on him all season,” Greening said. “He took on all comers man-to-man and shut them down. He had the kid at East Central (Titus Ryan) who is going to Alabama. He held him to one catch for six yards. He shut out the top guy at Coahoma. The kid at Northwest (Texas Tech commitment John Harris) didn’t catch a ball against him. “He’s just a big, fast cover corner – the kind of guy everybody’s looking for these days with receivers getting so much bigger and taller.” Stevenson will report to Baton Rouge in January and has three years to play two with the Tigers.
Uhhh....let's see......there is only 1 Deion and probably always will be......let's shoot for another Corey Webster....how sweet would that be?
http://louisianastate.theinsiders.com/2/212604.html One of the more intriguing additions to LSU’s 2004 recruiting class in the last month is cornerback Mario Stevenson of North East Mississippi Junior College in Booneville, Miss. The 6-foot-1 192-pound cover man has drawn some lofty comparisons to the likes of Deion Sanders. A former high school receiver, Stevenson tells Tiger Rag he’s found a good home on the other side of the ball. “I miss wide receiver sometimes,” Stevenson said. “But DB is a bigger challenge. When that ball is in the air, it’s up for grabs.” Stevenson excels in man coverage and cites LSU’s heavy use of man-to-man this year with corners Corey Webster and Travis Daniels as something that attracted him to the team. “They realy believe in getting after the quarterback,” Stevenson said “Coach Saban also coaches the DBs, and I really like that.” “LSU has a good program and they’re going to compete for national championships.” Stevenson will graduate in December and enroll in LSU in January. “I’m really looking forward to getting in there and learning the system,” he said “It’s a great system and I think we’re going to be competing for titles.” Stevenson says he doesn’t worry about his prime-time comparisons. “I’m just going to be Mario Stevenson,” he says. “That’s all I can be.”
