Here is a quote from Bertman concerning our non conference schedule. Finally we will hopefully be able to schedule the big boys of the NCAA. I know we all want 7 home games a season but to play the best you have to make some sacrifices. Cyber Chat #24
Something I've thought about with this 7 home game necessity and it being difficult with a 11 game schedule. Why can't you just drop 1 of the 2 bye weeks in the season. that creates a 12th date regardless. Is it an NCAA rule you have to have 2 byes?
I have always thought that only having 4 away games does not really prepare you for the big stage of a major bowl. Plus, at least one of those away games are going to be in front of about 35,000 people every year (MSU, Vandy). I think our guys need to play in a hostile environment as often as possible.
wELL, Va tech is looking for a home game on our new "open date." I say we give them one! If they refuse, at least the rest of the football world will know what we do. . .
There is no NCAA rule regarding "byes" or open dates. A team could start the season later or end the season earlier and have no "byes" or open dates between any of its games. The NCAA does, however, mandate a maximum number of regular season games a school can play. That number is generally 11. Not many years ago (I cannot remember exactly when it was), the NCAA began allowing teams to play 12 regular season games during years in which a certain # of Saturdays fell during the college football season time frame. So, it depends upon the calendar and won't happen again for a few years. If you ask me, it's silly. I think they should just make it a twelve game regular season every year. Also, a couple of games don't count against the maximum - the "preseason" Black Coaches game and a trip to Hawaii. Tigers 31 elephants 0 :geaux:
