Interesting interview on Sports Center just now. when they talked to Kirk Herbstreit about the state of college football today. When asked about the state of the BIG-ten, he stated that they were set back at least 10 years in his opinion. This was in light of the blowout loses of their biggest teams during the bowl games because he said bowl games are really the only way to truly size up conferences now with the lack of intersectional rivalries. He went on to say that leagues like, the Sec, ACC and Pac-10 could start to look at the Big 10 as another MAC conferance as for as respect and toughness of conference evidently. Pretty strong words when you think about it for a guy like Herbstreit, a former player at Ohio State and admittently, a Big-10 proponent.

Sounds to me like the NC game was a pretty sobering experience for him.

Kirk is usually pretty straight up. He was also quoted as saying, "With all due respect to Aubarn, when Alabama gets righted they own that state."

Pretty astute observation on his part.

I think Kirk could be wrong again, as he frequently is. Bama would just like for everything to go back to the way it was in the 60's - 70's, but it just won't do it. Scholarship limits changed everything. Who would have thought that Boise St. would beat a good Oklahoma team in a bowl game? Not me.

Regarding Bama and Auburn, and I confess that I have never spent a night in Alabama, I've only driven through it, but I don't think that will go back to the 70's. Auburn has enjoyed a decade of high success, capped by the 04 squad. For many kids, Auburn having the best team in the state is their reality and experience. If satan succeeds reasonably well, and I suspect he will (even if he's a jerk, he can coach college ball), this will only bring the Tide back to parity with Auburn. CTT can tout his winning record against satan, and continue to recruit well, IMO.

Guess Kirk has changed his tune. Of course he has had to eat a large helping of crow after the NC game. His pregame hype was that Fla did not even belong on the same field as Ohio State. Over the years, several times when Alabama came up he would bring up the Albert Means mess he talked about Alabama, how it operated and its claims to national championships being questionalbe except for a two or three years when they were AP NC.

Of course Kirk is always putting his foot in his mouth. I assume he will continue doing so as long as ESPN or someone payes him. However, I wil say that from time to time I do enjoy his discussion of particular games. Not that he is right very often.
