If only the folks behind the BCS could have this kind of common sense, college football would be much better. He is 100% correct about conference re-alignment and forcing BCS conferences to institue a championship game. The winner goes to a BCS Bowl. And the guy is right, there is an easy way to get it done. Tell the conferences that if they don't institue this process then they will not get an automatic BCS bid, that will get them moving. The only thing he left out was that there should be a small playoff between the top 4 teams. The winner of the top 2 BCS bowls should then play for the National Championship, thus giving the opportunity to win the NC to the top 4 teams in the country. Then after the tightwads were "secure" with this system, we could expand the playoff sytem to the top 8 teams.
This guy is dead on with almost all of his points. Great article. This is my take on the QW situation with LSU/Georgia. If you are playing a team for the 2nd time, it is only due to a Conference Championship game, so it's guaranteed that this is the last game these teams play for the season. In this case, award the team that won twice the QW based on where the loser was positioned in the BCS BEFORE the 2nd game was played. In other words, Georgia is 7th in the BCS, so LSU should get the full -.40 QW. What's sad is that if this were the rule, then an LSU victory would seal the fate for LSU making it to the Sugar Bowl.
islstl, could you please explain the BCS strength of schedule component? I know playing UGA twice helps the SoS for computer rankings. Does it help for the BCS Sos? That is, will we get credit for playing 10-2 UGA and 10-3 UGA (if we beat them) or will we just get credit for 10-2 UGA once. I ask b/c if LSU were playing Tenn, LSU would get the UGA and UT credit in the BCS SoS.
Yes it helps the BCS SOS as well. The way he said it in that article makes it sound like it doesn't. But he is only referring to the QW, which is what he ends up mentioning. He called it "strength of schedule points", he means "quality win points". Actually, we get credit for a 10-1 Georgia team twice, so it's 20-2. It's even better than what you are saying. You do not count your wins in your opponent's record. So technically, Georgia is 10-1 if you factor out the loss we gave them.
Actually, we will get credit for playing a 10-1 Georgia team twice, the LSU games don't count toward their record for SOS purposes.
College Presidents be damned, we need a play off system, whether it’s a 16, 8, or 4 game playoff format. You’re talking very few teams playing extra games with the vast majority playing only 1 or 2 extra. It makes no sense that today 1A football is still the only championship not decided on the field. I can’t see why a playoff can’t be integrated together with the current bowls.
