The Justice Dept is attempting to get data from the major search engine companies that would tell them what people are searching for on the net.

The Clinton Admin passed a child online protection law that was eventually overturned by the Supreme Court in 2004 because of privacy concerns. Looks like the Bush Admin is trying to revive this law.

Google has yet to comply with the subpoena, but it looks like Yahoo, AOL and Microsoft turned over data.

Be careful what you search on the net...

This failed to pass muster with the Supreme Court before. Why would they waste their time?

Maybe they believe the Supreme Court will be more likely to allow such a law with Roberts and soon-to-be Alito.

Just another example of Big Brother sticking their nose where it don't belong...

I am a supporter of Bush, but I am concerned about this. I would hope the search is not random but is limited to those individuals who are suspected of having ties to terrorists. But even that should require a warrant - like wiretaps. That is another area of concern for me.

One should be wary of giving the Bush administration any authority that he would not like see a Hillary Clinton administration exercising.

I agree with your above statement.

You've seen the movie SEVEN where they get info from the files of the public library on who has checked out certain books. The FBI has been monitoring that kinda stuff for decades now. This is another deal whereby the feds can get an easy start to an investigation without doing any work of their own.

This search is absolutely random and it has nothing to do with terrorism. They want millions of random records from these search engine companies.

They claim they only want the URL and not user info, so they can see what we are viewing on the net as it relates to porn. They want to do what parents should be doing ... monitoring what our children are doing on the net.

But give the government an inch and they'll take a mile...

They are going to find a lot of porn sites if they check a normal persons web-log

1984, thanks to the party of small government. Bush might be a good guy, but he sure seems more and more like a fascist on domestic policies.

Of course. It's all about the 'way in.' The most convenient, naturally, is protection. They did it with terrorism, they're trying to do it with porn, and Lord only knows what else they'll use next.

Don't you need a big brother to watch out for you???
