    Georgia vs. LSU
    The Road to Greatness

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    By Matthew Zemek

The Road to the Final Four? Try the road to greatness—it’s the road Georgia and LSU are traveling, and their paths will intersect this Saturday in a game that has quickly and decisively usurped Tennessee-Auburn as the SEC inter-divisional game of the year. While Tennessee has been less than impressive, and Auburn has been more than disappointing, we’ve seen two different stories emerge in Athens and Baton Rouge.

Georgia’s airtight defense has been nothing short of overwhelming, and LSU has a boatload of speed on offense. Georgia gives indications that Brian VanGorder’s unbelievable defensive unit can compensate for its limitations on the offensive line, and (only) a handful of clutch plays from Fred Gibson, Reggie Brown and David Greene. LSU offers a hint that quarterback Matt Mauck—once an awkward and decidedly unpolished passer—is not only the much-more-confident quarterback he became in the first half of last season, before an injury, but is actually the very cornerstone of the team, a dynamic force that puts the Bayou Bengals in very good stead as the curtain rises on the SEC season.

    best quote:

"Georgia and LSU: two teams that deserve to have the spotlight instead of Tennessee and Florida, and who are playing a mid-September game with the same pressures and long-term significance of the games the Vols and Gators used to play in the 90s. The winner could become the Next Really Big Thing in the SEC over an extended period of time. The loser will have a dogfight on its hands over the course of the rest of the season. One team will have the inside track to a second SEC title in the 21st Century, while the other will beat itself up on the inside and lament this loss when 2003 is all over but the shouting."

Now THAT, ladies and gentleman, is RESPECT...

I'm not homering here, either...but that's the most well-written sports piece I've read that hasn't appeared in Sports Illustrated in a long, long time...

    Interesting article...

The result of this game will not be a death blow to either team or likewise provide a free ride through the rest of the SEC schedule.

But it will go a long way to give the winner a decided edge.

Interesting that the Georgia OL was identified as still being suspect. They are young, but they are VERY GOOD.

CFN writes good previews and solid info but I never look at their pre-season crap or their predictions. They had South Carolina winning the SEC last year with an 11-1 record playing Ole Miss mind you against them. I mean....hello?

    Good post.

The one thing I am tired of reading is how the SEC is down b/c Tenn and Florida are not as good as before. Why can't teams take their place, aren't just as many teams in the SEC good now than they were when Tenn and Florida were ruling the SEC? Why can't Georgia and LSU take their place? Why is the SEC judged on only Florida and Tenn?

We started to see a change in the SEC when LSU beat Tenn twice and Florida lost Spurrier. Georgia, LSU, and Arkansas are the good big teams now in the conference . . . and that doesn't change the overall strength of the conference. Sorry for the rant.

Well, UF played for the national championship in 1995, won the national championship in 1996, and had won 4 straight SEC titles from 1993-1996. UT then won 2 SEC titles in a row to compliment a national championship in 1998.

When LSU and UGA collectively win 6 straight SEC titles and 2 national championships, we can start complaining. I agree, its frustrating, but you cant overlook the fact that our recent resurgence does not at all resembles their dominance.
