newsweek has a new poll out. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17875540/site/newsweek/ article: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17879317/site/newsweek/ noteworthy things: "49 percent) reported personally knowing an atheist" only half of people even know an atheist? that is crazy. who are you people friends with? lunatics? of my 10 or so best friends, only around 2 or 3 are not atheists. my inner circle is all atheist. "(87 percent) say they identify with a specific religion" man, that is embarassing. what a backward country we live in. "one-third (34 percent) of college graduates say they accept the Biblical account of creation as fact." some colleges need their accreditations revoked. 'Six in ten (62 percent) registered voters say they would not vote for a candidate who is an atheist" sad. i have read a poll like this before, and they never ask the question i want, which is "would you rather vote for a muslim or an atheist?".
I would not base my decision on his religion or lack of religion. I would base it on the character of the person and his political principles. However, most athiests asre probably left-wing liberal democrats who are 180 degrees from where I am politically. For that reason I doubt if I would vote for an athiest. But in all honesty, most athiest candidates for office would not "come out of the closet" because it would bedetrimental to their chances of gettng elected.
i'd kinda like to see the results of a poll that asked that question. although my answer would have to be that it depended on where each stood on issues.
Silly polls deserve silly answers.....The reason people like myself exist, is so we are never forced to make such a choice.
the premise of my question is that the only thing known about these hypothetical candidates is their atheism/islam. 60% of people would not vote for an atheist, period. maybe these same people would not vote for a muslim, or maybe they prefer the muslim. presumably the logic in that case would be that any religion, not matter how terrible, is better than none. that is the possibility i find most unnerving, that there is some value in belief and faith, just for faith's sake. that a person without faith is so bad, that even a muslim is preferable. since you both say you would base the vote on issues, you are saying there is no relevance to the religion, are you not? a muslim or an atheist, both are just as viable to represent you?
i have no idea what that means? you are saying there is a military (people like you) that fights and defends america, so we would never have an election where we had to choose between an atheist and a muslim? we have established you are in favor of killing (or was it exiling? i cant remember) all muslims. i will assume that means you would prefer to vote for an atheist.
An atheist politician is a scary thought. He would have no fear of eternal damnation so he could rob the taxpayers with impunity. A muslim, on the other hand, prays 5 times a day, then bombs women and children into Bolivia ( :hihi: ). I would pass on that election and work on my houseboat, which is where I plan to end up some day...away from everything and everybody. (I'd make an excellent hermit if I had TF to keep me company).
