 Mr. Godfrey is another example of a poor reporter. Even for OLE MISS, if I were the OLE MISS athletic director I would come print a statement saying that we did not condone or endorse any statements made by this buffoon. This is the kind of stuff that I see that hurts SEC football. This is NOT good advice. There is nothing wrong with standing up for your team but when you can condone drunken rowdy behavior and harrasment just because everyone else does it, you lower the respect of not only your school but the whole SEC. This guy is clueless. His message should have been. Support your team, yell, make it hard for them to hear, and send them back with a lose. Not get drunk and rasie hell. Getting "rowdy" should not include drunken stupor harrasement of opposing team's fans. Now I'm not opposed to a little brewsky or two here and there, but if it causes you to drive drunk or become a viloent thug, then I would have to ask you to lay off the juice. http://www.thedmonline.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2003/11/18/3fb9d65868343 COLUMN - Rebels' disrespect will only fuel the fire by Steven Godfrey Football Beat November 18, 2003 It's been said that in order to earn respect from others, one must first respect themselves. That's not entirely true. Rebel fans need fingers, toes and various other digits to count what they deem to be acts of disrespect among various entities in the college football world. Be it the polls, the critics, the betting lines, it's clear that despite the fact this year's team has told everyone they were this capable and in turn proved it, no one's willing to relent and agree. After beating what has become a lethal Florida team, Ole Miss was the underdog against Alabama (technically), Arkansas and Auburn. The Rebels won all three, only for each win to be followed by a smattering of talking heads pronouncing that they'd just lose the next game. They haven't. It took what seemed like an eternity to get the Rebs into the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, and the only reason they're ranked No. 15 this week is that the teams above them last week (Pittsburgh, Nebraska) all fell and did so miserably. Simply put, the Rebels had to move up, but are ironically still behind the three-loss Florida team they held to 17 points in Gainesville. And then there's that whole ESPN thing. Despite LSU trouncing Alabama to stay at No. 3 in the country, Eli Manning rewriting history books and Ole Miss sitting at 6-0 in the SEC, "College Gameday" chose instead to follow old favorite Ohio State into Michigan for yet another predictably boring Big 10 showdown. Currently, bowl projections are looming large, and not a single prognosticator in the country has the Rebels in a BCS game, even though they're one of only five possible squads left to earn that automatic bid by winning the SEC Championship. In addition, some analysts don't even have the Rebels in the Cotton Bowl, but instead the Arkansas team they beat. Well, all that's just fine by us. It's understandable that most of you might find the constant discredit of Ole Miss as a football powerhouse a little frustrating, but it's an opportune position for us to be in. Seriously. Be it the fact that this program hasn't seen such rich pastures in decades, or just that they started a shaky 2-2, no one is giving UM credit, and in turn, you couldn't label a single player (even Eli) overexposed or nursing a big head. Here's a news flash: LSU is favored by seven on the early line, just like all the other SEC West teams left in the Rebel wake. You might want to consider taking that as a good sign. How do we form a remedy for all these "haters"? It's real simple: win one more time. Saturday has to be the culmination of everything this 6-0 SEC run has built it to be, or else the nation's eyes will once again dismiss this program, and it will sink back into the sea of mediocrity. Add in the Manning factor, the embattled mascot embarrassment and the SEC title implications, and you're looking at the biggest Ole Miss football game of our lifetimes. It's not my place to say anything to players, but I'll just pass along the emotion of disrespect. It will take an immensely physical effort to beat LSU, so be sure to add that certain something when you pop them in the mouth. As for the fans, I'm almost required to send out a decree. Show up early, stay late and scream yourself hoarse. I'm not afraid of breaking PC and telling you what everyone's hoping you'll do: get drunk and get rowdy. Create hell on earth when LSU faces a third down. Make this "Hotty Toddy" the loudest ever. Coaches have said on several occasions that the energy in the stands directly affects the players in the tunnel. Get jacked up folks, because if you can't get up for this then you might want to check your pulse. This disrespect can only fuel the fire. What a sweet guy! I'd like to fule his fire.
I don't see anything wrong with what he wrote. He never said anything about harassing opposing fans, he said get drunk and rowdy. If an LSU writer wrote that I'd say hell yeah!!
You know, the Old Marines tell stories about the Korean War. They said that the Chinese would "dope up" the troops ... the average Chinese soldier was terrified of the automatic weapons fire and tremendous killing power of Mother Green and her killing machine, the United States Marines ... AND BLOW THESE WIERD SOUNDING HORNS ... for a frantic HUMAN WAVE bum rush of the Marine positions. Mr. Godrey's "HORN BLOWING" for a desparate DRUNKEN, DOPED UP OLE MISS "FREAK SHOW" signals one thing ... What we have here is a similar defeatist mentality and FEAR ... Not of Mother Green and her killing Machine, but of ferocity of the TIGER.
