In her ever resolute way, Hillary Clinton proclaims rather emphatically that she does AND does not support this plan. What a douchebag.
Non answer, non answer, non answer I guess the degree of illegaility is confusing me. If it's illegal to be here, then how on Earth can we knowingly document their information yet allow them to continue to break the law? Either change the law or give 'em the boot. I can't think of any other laws that can be knowingly broken, and then summarily ignored.
im ignorant on the issue. what horrible things does having a DL allow an illegal to do? drive? they already do that. and every time ive gone to get a new DL (4 states now) they never ask for proof of citizenship, just proof of residence (some bills). i dont think that having a DL somehow makes them legal. i want my govt to make sure that everyone on the road has insurance. this is a huge step towards that. btw. my current wife came here from australia, and she got a DL a few weeks after being here. she wasnt illegal, but they didnt ask for her visa.
To me there are two issues. One is a license to drive and the other is a legal identity card. These should be two separate documents and the problem would go away. Issue 1--ID: Search for an old post here on national ID for my full thoughts, but I think we should abandon the state drivers license and the social Security card as the primary identification cards in this country. They are too easy to obtain for illegals and too easy to counterfeit for criminals and our enemies. The technology exists now for secure digital ID cards that cannot be counterfeited and they should be provided for each and every US citizen and legal resident and no one else. It should be as verifiable as a passport. It would allow streamlined security checks at airports and prevent illegals from obtaining work. It would be a secure ID for legal, business, and financial purposes as well as proof of citizenship. Issue 2--drivers license: Now, if the state drivers license is no longer needed for a primary secure ID, then it can do its proper job to insure that drivers are competent to drive, can see well enough to drive, know the laws, are qualified to be commercial drivers, etc. These could be issued to anyone who is driving a vehicle in this country. It would allow police to better enforce the state and local laws. But it would not be a legal ID, which would also have to be carried by those who qualify. Only the national ID could be used to obtain work or benefits. With this setup, the drivers license could be issued to anybody, including aliens, to allow the police to insure that safety is assured. The illegals are driving anyway, uninsured, unchecked and untested, Registering them will not put more of them on the roads, just make it easier for police, who have no jurisdiction over federal laws anyway, to regulate illegals on the roads and enforce driving violations, insurance requirements, and safety laws. It would also make a paper trail for the federal authorities to track illegal aliens or enemies in the country far better than the drivers licenses and that they are currently faking.
why not use fingerprints instead of a tangible document? what, too close to the mark of the devil? red, as far as the DL as a safety issue, i get your point, but do you realize that tourists can drive in the US legally for 30 or 60 days on their home DL? cars are weapons (intentional or not) and also means of committing numerous criminal acts. scanners (similar to ones at toll booths) should be installed and major intersections, interstates and hwys that read the tags. if that sucker doesnt have insurance---go get um, barney. you must have a DL to get insurance.
A secure digital ID would have your photo and your thumbprint encrypted in the chip on the card. To be identified, a thumbprint scanner and a camera would check your face and thumb and compare it to the one in the card as well as the one in the national secure database. It would be impossible to fake the database match. You could even add retina scan to make it more secure for people with security clearances.
