Face it, he's gone. He won't turn down $5M, total control and a percentage of ownership. No way.

Time to start SERIOUSLY looking at replacement candidates. Jack Del Rio? I just looked at his bio -- he's the 2d youngest coach in the NFL. Played in the NFL until mid-90s. Asst. coach for the Saints under Ditka (but don't hold that agin him). Did wonders w/ Carolina defense as DC, has done well as Jaguars HC past 2 years. Does he have enough exp. to run a major college program, recruiting, etc.?

Mike Riley? Rich Rodriguez? Would be good choices but less than thrilling. Davis, Spurrier, Petrino, Tedford, Tuberville are out of the picture.

Promote from within? Won't happen (Mike Archer)

Hire someone from a successful lower tier program (No Texas St, Memphis, So. Miss)? Won't happen (Curley Hallman).

Hire someone w/ LSU ties? Who is there? Robiskie? Steve Ensminger? Won't happen.

Assuming he'd take the job (maybe a big assumption), Del Rio is a gamble but might be worth the risk, particularly in light of the available candidates, unless there is someone out there I'm missing -- Mike Holmgren? :lsug: :champs: :usaflagwa :laflagwav

Mike Holmgren is having a stellar year as coach at Seattle. His team absolutely sucks and have underachieved all year long.

    Next!

I really like Jack Del Rio
    2nd Darth Visor.
After that I'm not sure because I don't watch a whole lot of football outside of the SEC.

Del Rio will only be in play if J'ville has a complete meltdown and loses their playoff spot.

In that case, do you want him?

I would say yes, Spurrier is the perfect example.
Look at his tenure at the Redskins.

Some coaches can't get it done at the next level but I think Del Rio might
    be able to do both.
I was talking about your scenario, I really like Jack Del Rio but really don't
think he would take the LSU job over Jacksonville and being an NFL coach.

So that just leaves Darth Visor on my list, I don't know enough about the
other coaches because I don't watch much college football out of the SEC.
I don't remember who Petrino and certain other candidates coach.

You're an idiot, Fightin Tiger. I am a Saints fan, but primarily an LSU fan. Did you even graduate from the institution? It is pitiful reading posts wondering if Saban is going to stay or go, why is the Dolphin owner in town, etc. Why do you think he's in town? Duh! Can't you get a clue? Of course he's taking the job, he's been pursuing it for over a year and is getting everything he wants. It sucks, it hurts, but it's reality.

Why not focus on something much more productive, as in, who will be the next coach? I feel your pain, man, but it's time to face reality. And venting on me is really childish and counterproductive. How the hell do you know I'm a Dolphin you moron? I could care less about the Dolphins, and I think Saban is stupid to leave a great situation to swim in the shark-infested cold waters of the NFL. If he doesn't win immediately, they'll eat him for lunch. Then he'll come back to the college ranks with his tail between his legs, like Holtz, Carroll, and Spurrier, and Butch Davis next year.:helmet: :lsug: :champs: :bball: :eek:ldskule: :tigerhead  :tigbas: :laflagwav

Ok T Jeffrey, here's my take.

The timing of Saban quitting LSU and leaving us for the Fins is a positive career move for him, but it's terrible for LSU, because LSU is the last team in college looking for a HC. As such, the big names are already locked down with new jobs and new contracts.

This is a great day for the many enemies and haters of LSU. We are in a world of hurt, and they are lovin every minute of it.

Not to mention this years recruiting class, If Nick leaves the new coach will have his work cut out on him trying to save some of our prize recruits :dis:

    Indeed!

That's only part of what I was thinking when I wrote "world of hurt."

LSU will need a new HC and almost an entire new coaching staff. Sure, we've got some young talent as players, but the Dolphins have just caused LSU to be in the "franchise re-building business" just like they are. The only difference is, the Fins get their first pick as coach, and LSU's first two or three picks as new HC are NOT available.

Like I said, we are in a world of hurt.

I hope somebody can persuade me to be optimistic, because my trait for Gallic Fatalism is making me depressed.
