    good timing, buddy.

"A Republican congressman from Georgia who referred to Barack and Michelle Obama as "uppity" says he wasn't aware of the term's racial overtones and did not intend to offend anyone."

its like nappy-headed all over again. except that this is from a US congressman, not a talk show dweeb, and he's referring to a presidential candidate, not a basketball team.

    TheDude I'm calmer than you.

I have to admit to ignorance over it as well until I read the article and this thread. I have heard it used all my life and used it myself but just in relation to out-right snobs, usually the rich cousins or ex-girlfriends! The only time I can remember hearing it in relation to a black person was in a movie. Probably a Mel Brooks movie so now that I think about it, that would give even more credence to it having racial overtones.

I guess I have been accusing my family of being snobs and black at the same time.

The only "Black" reference indicates blacks coined the term. I guess that word needs to be filed away along with "lynching", "boy", "nappy" and "'coon".

I'm not defending it. I'm fostering discussion. Your reply confirms my suspicion that merely uttering (or printing in this case) certain words is perceived as racist. Is it not a fact that the terms I mentioned are words that should no longer be used?
