Things I saw that I really liked: 1. Offensive line blowing holes in the defense. 2. Freshmen running backs stepping up to the challenge. 3. Tight ends catching a lot of balls, this will free up the wideouts. 4. Controlling the clock with long drives. 5. Good coverage on the special teams. Things I saw that disappointed me: 1. Two missed extra points 2. The punter kicks great long, but poorly on the pooch punt. 3. Too many penalties, this is going to lose a game for us soon. Things that surprised me: 1. DE Spears playing safety on the Hail Mary. :geaux:
Spears was down there because he is so tall and he is an excellent basketball player, so he was a good person to have there. I have no idea why our DB would just volleyball it in the air for an easy grab. Supposed to bat the pass down. A thing that disappointed me was the fact that the last 4 games we have given up big plays, and it's mostly the linebackers fault for sucking. I sure do miss bradie james, cause the bubble screen pass should not have such awesome success. Last nights touchdown was somewhat Landry's fault, and I'm not sure he understands his assignments sometimes. Penalties are really aggravating me now. Good to see a solid rushing attack.
Something I noticed in the game that I haven't noticed in the previous 6...... Wilkerson pulling from the center position. That is impressive to be able to do that. Snap the ball, avoid the QB and get outside. I wonder if many teams do that? Something I didn't like. Travis Daniels got burned a couple of times. Once when the tight end dropped the pass.....would have been 6.
Red I'll add that didn't like like list: Four long 3rd down conversions in two games. 3 & 28 Saturday is absolutly pathetic. Against UF 3 & 21 , 3 & 18, 3 & 15. We can't continue to do this and win.
The placekicking game is going to kill us in a close game if the problem isn't solved very soon. I posted this idea a while back. When I was at LSU there were always some foreign students hanging around the parade grounds in the afternoons playing soccer. Some of them could really kick the hell out of a soccer ball. Sometimes I drive past the campus on Nicholson Drive and day or night there are always a bunch of guys out there on the big soccer field. If Nick would go out there and find the best of the best at kicking a ball and give them tryouts the problem just might be solved in a hurry.
I am pleased with the use of the TE. He will be good for 4 to 6 yds and will almost always fall foward a yard or two. If the TE get the right matchup we should dump it off to him all night long.
And the best part is that we had 3 different TE's in there catching passes. Eric Edwards, David Jones, and Keith Zinger all caught passes. I have missed having a good pass catching TE since Robert Royal.
I think our kickers brushed up against each other in pre-game warm-ups, 'cause your kicker certainly looked like he caught a good dose of whatever our kicker has had all season!! About the game, LSU simply rolled. We were missing 3 starters on D, but even if they were healthy I don't think it would have mattered...we still would have been beaten by a few scores. Hell, we had all our offensive starters in except 1 and as a team we didn't net a damn yard running with the ball. LSU's running game was running at 110%. I don't think a field of mini-Ditka's could have stopped them. Auburn is very good, and they are not the team that started 0-2, but if your D' and O' lines fire of the ball like they did against us, I think you will beat AU by a few scores, I really do. I am proud to say the USC has a very loyal and patient fan base, even after that 0-11 season we still packed the house..... but Saturday night was the first time in 15+ years that I saw probably 75%+ of our fans leave in disgust/disbelief with almost a whole quarter left to play.... If LSU can keep up the intensity and focus that they had Sat. night, they should have no problem going to the SEC champ. game and, God Willing, Stomp the piss out of Georgia... AGAIN. See y'all next time you pop up on our schedule.
