The NCAA will find itself in a mess of hypocrisy if they allow FSU to keep theres b/c they bitched about it, and still make the other schools do it.

The NCAA said they were allowing this even though they still had some reservations.
I thought that was a tad tacky.

I predict it will just be the first of many exceptions.

Surely every school will be able to find a group of native americans who are proud to have that school's athletic teams "honoring" the memory of their ancestors. A few mascots may have to be redesigned, and a school tradition or two changed; but I would be surprised if any school ends up being forced to change nicknames.

My bet is that the ones named after specific tribes will be cleared if they have a good relationship with the tribe. The more generic ones like "Indians" or "Redskins" will still be banned.

well, Redskins is just way to offensive. That isn't right. If you get rid of Indians, its only right to get rid of Cowboy's.

    Thanks for the update!

That's good news for FSU, but it only complicates the matter further for the NCAA. They have not only gone out on a limb regarding the setting of this rule, they have, again, put themselves in the role of arbiter of the morality.

So, it's ok for FSU, but what about the other schools that have a historical use of Indian names and use them respectfully? Illinois? Indiana? North Dakota? and others.

Why has the NCAA decided to put themselves in the middle of this debate? This very properly should have been decided soley by the separate universities in question.

Yet again, the measuring stick seems to be PC crapolla. If some people get their feelings hurt, then the offending party must be bad and abusive. There is no sense of measure. No common sense applications. We celebrate victimhood in this country.

Let us all say thank you to all of the scum sucking lawyers out there.

Great for FSU for scalping the NCAA. Those East Coast elitist presidents on that committee capitulated because of being called out on the hypocrisy of this idiotic rule by not only the universities and fans, but more importantly by the sports media. Words like Illinois, Dakota, Oklahoma are either directly or derivative of Indian words so it's so hypocritical of the NCAA to try and mandate this crap. Hopefully, Illinois will be the next to win followed by the North Dakota Fighting Sioux.

Why? That statement makes no sense. Cowboys were not the ones killing Indians en masse, it was soldiers. Just because you recently stopped playing "Cowboys and Indians" doesn't mean that it is historically correct.
