I have to travel to Little Rock for work, and I always get surprised when people warn me that Little Rock has the most gangs per capita in the Unites States. The hotels have more warnings about safety than I have seen in the South at least.

Little Rock. To most Tiger fans the namesake of this forgotten, lazy southern town likely conjures images of Bill Clinton. However, if you are a football player on the Arkansas Razorback squad led by Houston Nutt, playing in gang-infested Little Rock is a homecoming of sorts. You see, Arkansas is a unit that looks more like a highway chain gang than a college football team made up of (albeit trite) "student-athletes". You see, the Arkansas Razorback roster is riddled with the usual suspects. Here is a sampling: Cedric Cobbs, star running back, possession of marijuana (again) and speeding in January, 2002; Ken Hamlin, all-conference defensive back, received his second DWI charge earlier this summer; and lastly but certainly not least, Jermaine Brooks, standout defensive lineman, was finally kicked off of the team in late October for having several pounds of marijuana and cash in his apartment, along with a significant cache of firearms as well. Houston Nutt contends to this day that he never suspected Brooks to be a drug dealer, and that he had no knowledge of his improprieties. To add insult to Brooks's Halloween dismissal, the Arkansas Razorbacks dedicated the subsequent game against Ole Miss -- a victory as it turned out -- to their most recently-departed teammate. The fact that Coach Nutt allowed this dedication to occur speaks volumes of his character or apparent lack thereof. Even ESPN could not withhold comment regarding the Razorbacks' many brushes with the law this past year. The sports network issued a statement during the airing of their weekly show "The Season" that chronicles SEC Football, that they thought the company that filmed the show did little to expose the rampant drug and alcohol abuse problems on the Razorback team. Athletic Director Frank Broyles felt that the show's portrayal of his program was otherwise "positive". In today's high-profile world of college and professional sports, one can only wonder if these Arkansas football players have received preferential treatment from the courts -- and their coaches -- that have allowed them to continue on their downward, decadent spirals toward eventual incarceration and failure in life.
