As we look at (hopefully) fixing our tech problems and saving our fan site, I have a question regarding being on the site while watching games. When Brett owned it, we had optional chat rooms. So for having a conversation on the site during the game, do you prefer a chat room, or a conventional forum thread as we've been doing for the last 10 years or so?
Conventional thread. If someone joints during a game he/she needs to be apart of the full duscussion.
The thread offers permanancy, and is a venue for post game thoughts. The chat offers immediacy - type a thought and everyone sees it right away, no "refreshing" involved.
You can have your cake and ... you know the sayin'. . I'm not using it right now. I have. There's a chat program you can run and have everything archived in a game thread. It posts anything from the 'chat box' in the thread, "live." The box can be at the top of the page, sidebar ... There's also the option of a live thread...it works just like a thread but its built on the same "carriage" as what you'll see in coversations on sites like Facebook. The thread automatically refreshes every few milliseconds/seconds ... just depends on how you want to tax your server.
BTW, the live thread mentioned ... A little "tweak" and you've also got live conversations / private messages...turns that into a live chat, if you will. The "live" portion of the thread can be turned on and off ... I haven't tried with the latest version but on the old one you could turn the entire forum, every thread, live. You'd probably find that the best option if you check in on the "games of disinterest" thread ... it would be live as well.
