Shacking Up: N.C. Anti-Cohabitation Law Under Legal Attack

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - There are some 144,000 unmarried couples living together in North Carolina, and they are all breaking the law - a statute that has been on the books since 1805.

Deborah Hobbs, 40, says her boss, Sheriff Carson Smith of Pender County, near Wilmington, told her to get married, move out or find another job after he found out she and her boyfriend had been living together for three years. The couple did not want to get married, so Hobbs quit.

The article goes on to say the rule is rarely (read: never) enforced. So it's not THAT big a deal, but hey, it's progress!

under the law - formally known as the fornication and adultery statute

North Carolina is one of seven states that still have laws on the books prohibiting cohabitation of unmarried couples. The others are Virginia, West Virginia, Florida, Michigan, Mississippi and North Dakota.

Yep, they sure are. There are exceptions where they take up inflammatory causes, but philosophically generally represent what this country was founded on. I'm a pretty conservative guy (Libertarian), and agree w/ them about 90% of the time...much to the chagrin of just about everybody I know.

    Hello, I'm Red.

    And I'm a Libertarian.

I thought I was an independent pragmatist, but the internet says I have Libertarian tendencies, so I've entered this 12-step program . . .

Confushus say: Liberal's become moderate with age and Libertarian's become Conservatives with age. anotherwords, they grow a concsience with life's experiences. I'm sure they'll retort back, but I'd like to see their reply in oh say 10 years. :yelwink2:
