Well, I had quite a discovery this afternoon. One of my neighbor's trees hangs over our backyard a lot, and I've been curious about what sort of tree it is, since I keep forgetting to ask the neighbor. All I knew is it has a TON of something growing on it. So I was outside with the dogs, and looked at it again. Lo and behold, one of the things looked like a fig. In true idiot NLMD fashion, I picked it off and took a big bite, not really thinking, "Hey, this may not be food." I was lucky, much like the early caveman who discovers a new food. Figs aren't exactly my favorite fruit, but I sorta like them. Now that I've got a free, plentiful supply of them, I'm about to like them a lot more. Most aren't ripe just yet. Any of y'all have suggestions on things to make with them?
I believe I recall that my grandmother made jam with them, very good stuff. She had a fig tree in her yard and I remember eating a few off the branch.
I don't much care for them either. Like fig preserves and Fig Newtons. And I like to use them in Fruit Cake.
That was my father's favorite way. Not only figs but satsumas, kumquats, pears, etc. Don't care for figs much but I did like the perserves he'd make cause they were strawberry flavored.....all he did was add the strawberry flavoring from the jello stuff. My grandmother used to make a homemade pie with homemade pie crusts and others loved them. I liked the ones she'd bake with the blackberries we'd pick but she'd make us pick a bucket full and we only got one pie. :hihi:
I don't really have any suggestions, but the visual you painted was absolutely hilarious! I think I found most of my girlfriends in much the same scientific manner. I never really enjoyed figs until I started seeing them on cheese courses at restaurants and trying them with an assortment of different wines. Now I actually do like them, but invariably, they are merely served uncooked so this probably doesn't help you much. Bring some to the games in a month or so, and I will take some off your hands...
Living in Austin this probably won't be a problem for you, but we had a bunch of orange and grapefruit trees in our yard and it was great until hurricane Charlie. Then we realized the bad part...oranges and grapefruits hitting and breaking your windows in your house is SCARY!! Please understand that I know Katrina was worse but I am only saying that we would have been safe except for our hanging projectiles!!
Yea, I've often joked about how I'll die. I don't exactly live the healthiest lifestyle, yet defy the docs on things like blood pressure, cholesterol, and heart rate. And folks think I'm ten years younger than I am. Despite my range of horrible habits, I'm pretty sure something innocuous and unusually dumb like this is going to kill me. My wife was out of town while I studied today, and when I told her about the great fig harvest, she went back to the old refrain, "See, it's something like that that's going to kill you. Who eats stuff off the neighbor's tree because they THINK it looks edible." Ummmmm...me, that's who. And that's a pretty good way to go, if you ask me.
