I wanted a thread to post your favorite media bonehead moments with regards to LSU this season. I'll start with a few ESPN Chat sessions.
Kirk Herbstreit, November 6th: Steve (provo): Can you just tell all the FSU, Miami, OSU, and LSU fans that USC deserves to play OU. Do you agree that they are the only team that has a shot to beat OU? Kirk Herbstreit: As of November 6, Steve, the pecking order should be ... Oklahoma, USC ... and then whoever. I know USC got upset by Cal early in the year, but if you've watched the Trojans in the last four or five weeks, you would know that outside of Norman, Okla. the hottest team in the country is USC. You'll have to forgive the Big-Ten, SEC, Big-12 and ACC fans, the only time most of them saw USC was when they went to South Bend and decimated the Irish on national TV. When the Trojans play a regional televised game, no matter who they play or who they beat, fans back east give them very little credit b/c they don't see them play. Speaking as an individual who watches every team, every week, USC is very deserving of their No. 2 slot. Now, just don't screw it up ... without a conference championship game to worry about, the men of Troy are three wins away from Bourbon Street. Trev Alberts: November 17th: Tim (Dayton, OH):: Trev Why are most of the experts and the media so upset about OSU jumping USC in the BCS rankings this week? If you take USC out of the Pac-10, where does the conference rank? Certainly the MAC and M-West are better, but what about the WAC? Sun Belt? Bottom line, Trojans have little competition. Trev Alberts: I'm not one of those people. I went on the air and said if OSU beats Purdue and Michigan, they deserve to defend their title. The AP and Coaches Poll both have USC higher. It would just be the BCS rankings that include these crazy computers that has OSU higher. You can sort of understand that. That's why everyone will be upset. With the BCS, it'll be a team like LSU that decides who plays for the national championship. It's really weird. Roger, New Orleans, Louisiana: Hey Trev - What do you think are LSU's chances should they sweep the rest of the season against Ole Miss, Arkansas and Georgia - you think they have a shot at tasting Sugar come January? Trev Alberts: No. Assuming USC or OSU finishes with only 1 loss. If OSU loses to Michigan or USC stumbles, they would have a chance. But that shouldn't diminish a terrific season by LSU. November 24th: Mark (Tyler, TX): LSU's defense may well be the best in the nation. But can the Tigers win a national title with Mauck at QB? Trev Alberts: I disagree with the feeling LSU has the best defense. They have the third best behind OU and USC. That's why voters would say LSU is the third best team. You have to be honest and realize your offense has been inconsistent and you can't say that about OU or USC. Ivan Maisel, November 18th: Chris, Baton Rouge, LA: Ivan, No one seems to take this question head on, but do you think that voters should reward conferences that choose to step up and play conference championships? USC and Ohio St. have far easier seasons when one considers the fact that they don't have to play the second-best team in their conference AGAIN on a neutral field. LSU and OU must. Your thoughts? Ivan Maisel: Ohio State and USC didn't play Western Illinois and Louisiana-Monroe, which LSU did, so I wouldn't go there if I were you. Seriously, I understand your point, but since all the conferences run the BCS, they aren't going to agree to favor the leagues with championship games. The Pac-10 and Big Ten aren't interested in having one.
"ALI LANDRY SCORESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!--Jim Hawthorne during the broadcast of the LSU/South Carolina Game
Anybody know the mailing addresses of these guys? I want to send Trev, Kirk, Mark and Ivan some Tony Chacheries to season their crow pie with.
Nice to know USC has a better D than LSU. See, that's the kind of utter ignorance that inspired the LSU e-mail campaign that the media criticized. Statements that are so far removed from reality spoken as gospel truth.
How about the constant "Georgia is just the better team, they should have won that game" comments. I swear I heard the ESPN talking heads saying that every week, no matter who we were playing. ESPN also thought that Auburn was going to run all over us, and Ole Miss was going to pass all over us. ESPN has been wrong about the Tigers all year, with the exception of a 1 hour span Sat night. By the way . . . here are some for the future. Both ESPN and collegefootballnews have Okla beating the Tigers by atleast 10 pts. We will just have to prove them wrong again.
....well, I guess we all know where Jim's mind was....I can't blame him. We'll call that a Freudian slip of mass proportions. I wonder what his wife said about him calling out another woman's name???
This may not exactly fit the category, but Mike Lopresti's column today makes it sound like LSU did something wrong. The only thing I take serious issue with is his bringing up the "Unholy Trinity" of ULM, WIU and LaTech. LSU is #2 in everybody's poll. We belong. http://www.magatopia.com/columns/Mike_Lopresti.html
This would fit. What I'm looking for is old articles by writers saying "LSU doesn't belong, they haven't beaten anyone, USC is the $hit!" type articles. Just makes for good reading to laugh at.
