Saban left Miles with right stuff

    Tuesday, May 01, 2007

    Les Miles can't win.
Poor guy. Despite going 22-4 in his first two years, he can't escape Nick Saban's tenebrous shadow. He must wake up in the morning thinking of Saban and go to bed with the same thoughts. One can only imagine the nightmares Alabama's new coach must give him while he sleeps.
Saturday should have been LSU's day to shine in the NFL draft. It should have been a celebration for Miles, much like it was two years ago for Tommy Tuberville when Auburn placed four in the first round. Instead, Miles was missing in action, about as difficult to find as Jimmy Hoffa's body.
However, Nick Saban was mentioned early and often. The former head coach who recruited the four NFL future stars -- JaMarcus Russell (No. 1), LaRon Landry (No. 6), Dwayne Bowe (No. 23) and Craig Davis (No. 30) -- seems to have all the luck.
Miles could have streaked through the draft party at Radio City Music Hall and nobody would have noticed or cared.
Les Miles, meet Rodney Dangerfield. The man who can't get any respect.
Things are so bad for Miles that in a recent survey by Tom Dienhart of The Sporting News, ranking the top SEC coaches, Miles ranked No. 10. In plain language, that's after Rich Brooks and right before Sly Croom. In my poll back in January, I had Miles No. 8.
Dienhart expanded his list to top BCS coaches. He ranked Miles No. 41. Saban was ranked No. 1 in the same poll in the SEC and No. 7 among BCS coaches. Has there ever been a coach at a big-time school receive less credit than Miles?
The translation is simple: Miles is living off Nick Saban's recruits and time could be short on the Bayou. And everyone with a working brain can figure it out.
Tuberville had a similar day for Auburn two years ago with four players taken in the first round, including three in the top 10. But Tuberville actually did something with his players. He went 13-0 and won an SEC title. The impact of the 2005 draft day also impacted his recruiting the next two years.
What did Miles do with all of his talent? Well, he won a lot of game but no championships.
Is there any doubt what Saban could have done with his own players in years six and seven at LSU? If Miles went 22-4, Saban would have easily added another SEC title, perhaps two, and possibly grabbed another national title as well.
Can you say Spurrier-like dynasty at LSU?
The most amazing aspect of all of this is some LSU fans who really believe Miles can coach. Well, I'm not sure they really believe that but because of the animus now built up toward Saban, they are forced to say so publicly. Deep down, I think LSU fans are probably smart enough to know they have a train wreck in the making.
It's so comical that I honestly feel sorry for LSU fans.
They are celebrating the four LSU players taken in the draft as if it really has an impact on their program. It doesn't. Now, had LSU won the national title, there would be a residual impact. It will be a plus for Saban, though. But can you imagine the players laughing at Miles if he tries to take some credit on the recruiting trail?
Sure, coach, the players will be saying, you did such a great job with JaMarcus Russell, you didn't win a title and your star quarterback didn't even make the first-team AP All-American team in 2006. Or second. Or third.
Isn't it interesting how Russell blossomed -- in the eyes of the NFL scouts -- once he got away from Les Miles?
So if you're paying attention, coach Miles, take some friendly advice. Call your agent. Tell him to start checking the yellow pages for some potential coaching openings. You will likely have another good year at LSU. But time is short.
You've averaged 11 wins a year and can make believe you had an imprint on the NFL draft. However, real football people see through the fa ade down there. Wise up before it's too late.

Wow, this guy really wants to help sell some papers and that is about it. All of his proclaimed facts are based on irrelevant events and therefore it mist equal a train wreck for LSU.:hihi: Miles coached these players just as long as Saban did and Miles got more out of them than Saban did. As someone noted on this board Jimbo Fisher deserves the most credit for bringing up these players and making them the type of players they are today. Too many holes in this article to go through. I really dont know what this guy is thinking. Sounds like a BitterND rant if you ask me.

LSU is in the best shape it has ever been, I am not saying that Saban didnt help get us here but everyone played a role and LSU is here to stay with or without certain coaches, players, or personnel. Saban didnt get all these recruits either, many players dont like his approach to recruiting and other coaches on the staff were resonsible for getting these players to LSU, and Miles convinced RP to come here after Saban was out the door. LSU sells itself and it is not too difficult to get players to come to LSU now especially in our own state.

And with all the rankings of Miles and not getting respect is a good thing in my eyes. I will take a few more years of coaches/teams not fearing Miles because we have seen how good that has worked for our opponets. :)

Now lets not all get into a rant about this garbage article because you know all the Bama fans are probably logging on now or signing up just to see if this BS is going to make us come to some sort realization that this guy knows what he is talking about and we should fear the future of LSU. I know Terry wont because he has stated many times that this guy is a joke of a writer who just tries to stir the pot to generate a buzz.

Yeah, I saw this at al.com a couple of days ago and did not want to post because it was so tabaloid. He wrote an artcile about 10 days ago dishing the national media for calling Bama fans delusional and how classless the nationa media is toward hating Saban and Bama. Then he turns around and does the same thing to Miles and LSU. I think the guy is desperate for readers and listners. A good many Bama fans don't even like him. He's an idiot.

Finebaum is really good at what he does. Unfortunately, what he "does" is stirs the pot and not write real stories.

He bashed Bama to death as well. UAB is even worst.
