Lets face it, though OK did not win their conf champ, their only loss was to a conf champ, a talented, ranked team. It was really the overwhelming butt-whipping that makes it so unpalatable. Nevertheless, I believe this loss is no worse than USC's or LSU's loss, and should not count as worse just because it cost them their conf champ. A knee-jerk rule change to disallow non-conf-champs from participating in the MNC game could be disasterous. What if OK was the only one loss team, or what if all of the conf champs were underdog-winners? Remember LSU going to the sugar in 2001 with 3 losses? You have to allow for the possibility that one or even both of the at-large teams are the clear choices to compete in the MNC game. Any absolute "exception" to allowing the algorithm to pick the top two teams faces the possibility of absurd outcomes. Perhaps the only exception I can think of at the momment that would resolve the current controversy, and have minimal likelyhood of future problems, is to extend an automatic bid to any team that is ranked number one in both human polls. On the other hand, if this exception were in place this year, USC's opponent would be OK, since they have the best BCS record! And let's face it, the criteria that must be met by any future rule changes is that LSU can't get the short end of the stick!!!!!
I do not think they should 100% be excluded but there should be a penalty for not winning their conference. If they are still good enough to overcome the penalty than they deserve to be there. After the NEB mess in 2001 the BCS even looked into it, but they could not come to a decision.
I think you have to win your championship game But, I think every conference should or shouldn't have a champ game
Yeah, except that the other two candidates were conference champs. That alone should boot OU, everything else you say is therefore rendered moot! :dis:
Well there could be a flaw with you "must win your Conference" in that it could keep a number 1 or 2 out of the game that they may deserve. example: Let's just say that LSU would lose to an SEC West team and this would be our only loss of the year. That team that beat us wins all of it's SEC games but lets say drops one or two out of confrence games. The LSU loss comes early in the year and all teams in front of us lose one game after our loss, we are ranked #1 in all polls and by the BCS. The team that beat us is in the SECCG and just for this example LSU only has one loss and all other teams have at least two, would you still think LSU did not deserve to play in the BCS Championship game? I think they need to change the BCS to somehow keep these things from happening, but in a playoff someone would be upset because they didn't get in it also.........
BCS got it right, plain and simple. All the moaning and crying wont change anything. USC lost to the worst team out of all the teams with one loss, and to boot they had the EASIEST schedule. There is no other argument. OU had a MUCH tougher schedule. The humans are flawed, that is why we went to 7 computers. That is flawed too. Every year we will have to hear bitching and moaning until we make it some type of playoff system. I am for the top 4 duking it out, no more than that. __________________
I understand your point. Perhaps the way to deal with this is to bring some sort of human-veto process into this. Look, even the BCS is basically acknowledging another screw up. They know that an OU team that got whacked last night should not be in given the present circumstances of this season. Those circumstances will likely be different in future years. There needs to be a human aspect that would take over from the computers in situations like these. Maybe the conference presidents vote on it. I think if they would have voted today, OU would have been out. $.02
Tigerfan90 you have a good point and I agree with aztiger03. Man this stuff is a mess, but at least LSU deserves to be in the game.
