Ever wonder why some people can say anything and are given a pass, while equally honest statements\opinions by others cause an outpouring of rage? The last paragraph even qualifies why it is tolerable for Paterno to make this statement. I would be surprised if DeBerry doesn't graduate a greater percentage of blacks than Paterno, given his school. If any SEC coach besides Crooms made this statement, especially since it was prefaced with a comment about "basketball on grass", there would be a national spasm about the same old Deep South.

DETROIT - Did Joe Paterno step on a land mine?

During this week's Big Ten football coaches teleconference, the Penn State coach answered a question about the Big Ten transforming into a fast-paced, offense-oriented, high-scoring conference.

After a lighthearted mock of Purdue coach Joe Tiller, the pioneer of the high-flying "basketball on grass," Paterno shifted gears, adding that the increase in black players during the past few decades was one of the main reasons that football in general has become a faster game.

"You've gotta be careful how you say things sometime because poor DeBerry got in trouble, but the black athlete has made a big difference," Paterno said, referring to Air Force coach Fisher DeBerry. "They've changed the whole tempo of the game. Black athletes have just done a great job as athletes and as people in turning the game around. You can say what anybody wants to say about it. It's a different game because of them."

DeBerry was blasted last month for saying in a news conference that Texas Christian might have beaten his Air Force team, 48-10, because TCU "had a lot more Afro-American players than we did, and they ran a lot faster than we did." Paterno's comments had a different tone and his program has long been a model of racial diversity. The four-year graduation rate for his African-American players regularly exceeds the national average - it was 72% for the 1997-98 freshman class, according to the latest statistics available.

Paterno can say just about whatever he wants right now because he's winning. Last couple of years when he wasn't faring so well, the sharks would have been on him.

As for SEC coaches, Crooms can say whatever he wants without hesitation. If Miles, Nutt, Tubby, Richt, Fatboy, Spurrier, Meyer, Shula, make that statement, they're in the dumper and the media has a field day. Orgeron would never make such a statement. He hasn't figured it out yet. :hihi:

Why was it OK for people like Dusty Baker to say that blacks can handle the heat better than whites, but yet Deberry gets slammed for it. Sure ESPN covered Baker's comments for a day but never got the attention that Deberry has.

It is because White people have had the right of free speach taken away as part of the settlement from the civil war. You see African Americans can speak their mind but White Americans cant.

Or if you do you face the double standard in place put their by the media.

Toledo is a prime example. Now let me say i dont agree with the White Supremist movement but freedom is allowing people who you disagree with to have their say so without the fear of violence or retribution.

You dont have to agree with what they say but you do have to defend their right to say it.

Now it isnt even the black people who complain. They have the liberal news media so trained that they just stand back and laugh while these liberals go after people that even they dont disagree with.

It is called being politically correct.

I have seen Jesse Jackson say things that are so racist and predujice that it makes my skin crawl and he is givin a free ride.

Let a Fisher Deberry say something where he is actually praising them on their athletic skills and he gets crucified.

Athletics has been the race barrier breaker and has helped many black people escape poverty. The reason being people in competition want to win. And they want the best people they can find to help them do that.

Our news media doesnt report the news anymore. They take the news and slant it in a way that serves their purpose.

It is sort of like the joke someone told on the Bama Joke thread.

If you like Bama then killing the dog made the boy a hero. If you like Auburn then it made the boy a murderer of a family pet.

True impartial news media story would have reported that their was a dog killed and it was done by a little boy. The reason is because no one from Alabama can get along.

You've got that backwards and any conservative and many liveral blacks will tell you the same. It's the liberal media that is calling the shots. They are trained in liberal universities and continue throughout their careers.
