Ara Parseghain Notre Dame, Darryl Royal Texas and Bowden Wyatt Tennessee came close posting a 2-2-1 record in Bryant's first five years, Bryant won the last two from Wyatt. There may be some that only played Bryant once I don't have a list to look at, it's just hunt and peck.
Barkley makes very valid points, however, he has little credibility because it's always about race with him. That said, it appears to be a no brainer between Gill and Chizik. Want to bet who will be more highly regarded 5 years from now?
Absolutely phenomenal site for finding such a statistic: http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_ia/sec/alabama/opponents.php?start=1958&end=1982 That is Alabama's record against all opponents played from 1958 to 1982. Astonishingly, Alabama has NEVER beaten Texas.
Been using that site for years and use it almost daily along with ncaa.org. True the record shows we have never beat Texas but we do have 1 tie. after the Cotton Bowl loss Joe Namath told Coach Bryant he scored on that goal line QB sneak, said he was a foot over the line. Coach Bryant told Joe he should have been two feet over the line so there would be no question about it.
I'm not saying his dismissal was warranted (or am I?), but looking at the history (Cholly was before my time), I can see loads of talent for years, and no national championship. That wouldn't fly today. If you think about it, he never won 10 games in a season. 1962 Charles McClendon 9-1-1 1963 Charles McClendon 7-4 1964 Charles McClendon 8-2-1 1965 Charles McClendon 8-3 1966 Charles McClendon 5-4-1 1967 Charles McClendon 7-3-1 1968 Charles McClendon 8-3 1969 Charles McClendon 9-1 1970 Charles McClendon 9-3 1971 Charles McClendon 9-3 1972 Charles McClendon 9-2-1 1973 Charles McClendon 9-3 1974 Charles McClendon 5-5-1 1975 Charles McClendon 5-6 1977 Charles McClendon 8-4 1978 Charles McClendon 8-4 1979 Charles McClendon 7-5 17 years, and only one SEC championship. In his last 6 years, he went 38-29-2 and didn't appear in the top 10 once in his last 9 years. He certainly deserves respect, but is it disrespectful to say he never won the big one? It is spelled correctly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Frederick_Barclay
