I will update this from time to time so we can see if the polls tighten in the swing states the closer we get to the election. A few made the point that Romney needs the debates and I would agree. First, he's going to have to do something about his tax returns just to get the media and Harry Reid to move on. Otherwise he is going to get pounded day after day and he will have effectively lost the election in July because everyone will assume he is hiding something. Next, he needs to hit Obama hard in the debates and with some depth and substance and for Obama to stumble when he offers a rebuttal. Third, Romney needs bad unemployment numbers, higher gas prices (which looks likely) and for overall economic news to be stale or altogether bad. Lastly, Romney needs to better articulate what he would do as President. He has been riding the anti-Obama sentiment and that will work well with his base but to win independents he needs to lay out his vision for the country in a way that is easy to understand and makes sense. He needs to stop all of this "I'm just going into the hardware store to get some hardware" kind of staged events because people aren't stupide and it isn't authentic. Coming from someone who isn't going to vote for him I think this is pretty good advice.
Romney's best chance is to move just right of center. Get away from the religious nut-jobs. They think they're mainstream because they made a statement at Chik-fil-a. They're not. Concede the black vote. He's not going to get it. He'll get some, but by and large, not much. Even though Condy Rice talks a good game, when that curtain closes, I don't even think she's voting for him. But she'll say she is because that's her comfort zone. Black folks tend to be ultra-conservative through religious practice, but pride will not let them (us, lol) vote for the white guy. It is what it is. Move on. Say something to appease gays that doesn't involve flatly opposing gay marriage without offering options to other equal rights except the m-word. Appeal to women without coming off as wanting to control what they do what they're bodies. Newsflash: the vast majority of women personally oppose abortion, but they sure as hell don't want you telling them they can't get one if they want to. It's the principle. Appeal to the Latino vote by having a Taco cookoff in Arizona. Illegals show up to the border "tres" at a time with a homemade taco. The best taco gets American citizenship on the spot. 2nd best goes on the waiting list for re-entry into the contest. The worst one gets sent back with no chance of re-entry. If they're caught sneaking it, they will be shot on site. But seriously, the Latino vote is up for grabs, much like the non-black women vote. But you won't get it by going Arizona on Latinos. In the end, it doesn't matter what he truly believes. He's trying to win an election. A far-right conservative has as little chance as a far-left liberal in a POTUS election. It doesn't matter what you are, it matters how you run.
