Government and city workers in downtown BR have been evacuated and sent home form work due to unrest downtown. Workers were getting taunted and yelled at while making their mornign walks to work form the parking garages. All workers were sent home.

BR police have now established a strong presence downtown and countless officers are carrying shotguns over their shoulder. Just saw all of this on WBRZ 2. Was really something astonishing to see. BR mayor wants the people in the River Center to be relocated asap.

I really did not think we'd have such problems here in BR. My gf went out an hour ago to go to the store. I was so worried and kicking myself for not having gone with her.

I hate to be the one to say this but I have always hated visiting New Orleans because of the general types of people you have to deal with at times to go do things there. To much of the world, N.O. is a wonderful city but I am sure there are those like me who share my thoughts. I feel so bad that these types of people are now in the world's spotlight. :(

This makes my choice of moving out of the area 4 years ago look pretty good right now. Sarcasim asside, it really breaks my heart to see this going on in my home state and especially my home town of Baton Rouge. Baton Rouge has enough of its own problems without introducing this type of element to the area. I support Kip Holden in saying get these people out of the city of Baton Rouge asap.

I am now very worried for both my family and my wifes family who live in the Baton Rouge area.

Rumors, panic and fear is taking over BR. From The Advocate...

Workers in the Governmental Building and Courthouse in downtown Baton Rouge began leaving their offices before 10 a.m. today — the first day back on the job since Hurricane Katrina struck Louisiana — for security reasons.

The Mayor’s Office, the Clerk of Court’s Office and the 19th Judicial District Court were among the offices closing for the day. The Clerk of Court and 19th JDC will remain closed until Tuesday, said Jo Bruce, judicial administrator.

Employees were particularly concerned about walking to their cars in the Governmental Building’s parking garage after hearing rumors that cars were being vandalized near St. Louis Street.

On one of the basement parking levels, where many employees park, there was a report of a suspicious man walking around the cars. A search of the parking area found no one.

Bruce said the reason for closing the government offices is because there is concern that there will not be adequate security for employees.

“The Sheriff’s Office is just spread so thin,” said Bruce. “It’s just really not worth the risk to people.”

There also was a report that there were serious problems inside the River Center — being used as a refugee haven for evacuees.

Baton Rouge City Constable Reggie Brown said reports that there were shots fired in the center are not true. He also said reports that a riot took place are also not true.

Brown declined to disclose the extent or nature of the problem inside the center.
