Getting ready for dove season here in Texas. I am having a hard time finding a lease close to Katy, TX. I know there are a few hunters in the area, anyone have any suggestions?

Back in the newspaper days, the classifieds would be filled with clubs that had openings. If not your regional papers, how about craigslist or the Texas equivalent of Louisiana Sportsman?

I have found a few places like that, just looking for one closer to the house so I can go during the week with my pup. I am already on a lease in the South zone, but those are about an hour away.

I'm not much of a hunter anyway, but I didn't realize that people hunted doves. I thought quail was really the only type of bird that people hunted.

My grandfather hunted squirrel, which I thought was very Beverly Hillbilly-ish. I couldn't imagine ever eating one. I guess if it's a critter, somebody, somewhere will hunt it.

My kids have eaten squirrel for years. They love it, but didn't know they were eating it for several years :)

How did they react when they found out? If I tasted it and liked it, but then found out what it was, I don't think I could eat it again. I'm just kinda weird like that.

Had my youngest kill her own and we all tasted it for the "first" time. You can buy rabbit at Rouses, so I have done that as well. Told them the only difference is who kills it. Also, I fish a lot and show them the same fish that I catch in the grocery store.

I used to hunt squirrel after school with my friend. I didn't like them much, but my friend and his dad loved them so they would take them all.

I grew up eating rabbit at least once a week. We raised them along with chickens and ducks. My grandpa loved turtle soup, no one else would eat it. So I didn't, plus I watched him clean one. I would be willing to try it once now.

Did anyone watch the naked and afraid episode in Louisiana. They ate a nutria rat, that turned my stomach.

I have been wanting to eat nutria. I have seen (on tv) several notable cooks prepare it who say it is very good. I believe @LSUsupaFan mentioned that he had eaten it?

@KyleK, I have indeed had nutria. It is a very pretty meat. It is like a whiter, cleaner rabbitt meat.
