So you like the idea of socialized medicine...Everyone should have "free" health care you say?

Read the comments below the main article. I found them to be very enlightening. This is the health care system that the democrats are pounding their chests about.

Doctors are calling for NHS treatment to be withheld from patients who are too old or who lead unhealthy lives.

Smokers, heavy drinkers, the obese and the elderly should be barred from receiving some operations, according to doctors, with most saying the health service cannot afford to provide free care to everyone.

Fertility treatment and "social" abortions are also on the list of procedures that many doctors say should not be funded by the state.

Solution: If the elderly are not being offered a complete service, demand a refund through the European Court of Justice. If the obese are refused healthcare, recommend hard drug use which will reduce appetite and feel good at the same time. Beware. Britain had once the reputation of being the fairest country in the world and it is now the horror story of Europe. We are reaching beyond mere bullying of the obese and "constitutional" neglect of the elderly, to a point of mass abuse of human rights. Treatment isn't free - we pay for it through our taxes. So deliver as promised; a contract is a contract.

This country gets more like 1930's Germany every day - the governemt gets more and more controlling but no one is doing anything about it. I'm as bad as the next man, but the apathy here is pretty scary!

Yet another reason why the British migrate away from a country that seems to no longer want them! Rather than deny the obese, elderly, or generally unhealty in a bid to save money, why not deny free health care to illegal immigrants or asylum seekers first? How about cutting back on handing out free benefits to the countless population of scroungers rather than denying healthcare to tax payers... or perhaps we should simply stop paying taxes! We never seem to benefit from it anyway!!

Can I have all the money back I've paid in NI contributions to an NHS that won't treat me in my old age? Otherwise, that's taking money on false pretences, isn't it?

If we not going to treat those who smoke, drink or eat too much, then it is only reasonable to not treat those who get ill in a gym, mountain or in a marathon, get STD's, Aids, want abortions, fertility treatments, lifestyle diabetes and oh yes pregnancy is also a lifestyle choice should have a licence for that? To me this just seems to be a very slippery slope.

Another postcode lottery. Quite frankly I think the electorate are getting tired of this. We all pay the same level tax everywhere in the UK - quite frankly everyone should have access to the same level of care. If that level of care is below a certain standard, then the private sector can step in and offer a top-up for those who want to pay. The way things are now, nobody knows what the NHS will cover and what they will not. No doubt the obese elderly smokers living in Scotland - paying the same level of tax as everyone else - will be covered for procedures which those elsewhere are not. If you are going to exclude certain people from NHS care, please let them know ahead of time, and give them an opportunity to opt out of national healthcare so they can spend their hard earned cash on private care.

This coming out days after the government suggest that we are going to have to contract out of donating our organs, doesn't inspire me with confidence. Is this one step away from letting people die so that their organs can be 'harvested'? Just as I think I have read too many sci-fi books, this government, and its lap dogs, say something that makes me think that there is now no such thing as science fiction. And doctors, what about the Hippocratic Oath?

I'm sorry, but are you guys under the impression that we live in Britain? :lol: No One is suggesting a European-style socialized medicine plan here. No one. I challenge you to show me a Hillary or Obama plan that suggests such.

Universal Health Insurance would involve private insurers and private hospitals, clinics, and doctors. It would replace the current system of Charity Hospitals and County free clinics (socialized medicine if there ever was) with health insurance that can be used at the doctor/hospital of your choice. Almost exactly like the Bush Administration's Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage does.
