And "tried to get europe to stop buying russian gas" is not saying anything at all in light of that, because the EU makes its own decisions on such matters. And because Russia then cut its gas shipments to Europe in retaliation for their Ukraine support, which proves that they didn't need European gas customers to fund this war.
