1. The board is slow, so why not speculate?

With his athletic ability, and tendency to go deep, does anyone else see him being able to put up the numbers to win the Heisman? I look at the pool this year and other than the two guys at west virginia, it's pretty wide open. I also feel like those two guys will cancel each other out and won't be rewarded for playing in the big east anyways....

I figure Matt Flynn will be outside the pocket a lot, and with our guys' speed down field and the core group of runningbacks we have... defenses will have to stay honest...

sure it's a stretch, but if LSU gets some attention early, and we can win some of those marquee games we have lined up... I don't see why he won't get some attention?

    Thoughts? :geauxtige

I don't know, and frankly doubt it. In the defense-heavy SEC I don't see Flynn putting up the numbers that guys like John David Booty will probably have at seasons end.

Like a lot of people I see him playing more like Mauck and worrying about winning more than getting 300 yards and 4 td's.

To even have a shot at a Heisman, you have to come into the season with a pre-season All American reputation and have ESPN jumping all over your hog in July and not letting off even if you lose (see Brady Quinn).

I cannot think of a single LEGITIMATE Heisman contender that did not fit that mold. Several have gotten a lot of talk during the season, and Flynn surely has a chance to be mentioned, but to actually get invited to the ceremony is highly unlikely.

    What about McFadden??

McFadden's to lose and Booty's to win from being at "The right place" if he puts up good numbers, and Brennan's got the best chance of being "Outside, looking in", or in other words, screwed. Slaton is exciting to watch too, not easy for teams to contain him.

Too late, the race for the Heisman has already begun.

I won't be surprised one bit if he doesn't get invited... I mean russell didn't get invited last year and his stats were better than quinn and troy smith

but I just have a feeling that he's going to set the world on fire this year with his legs and arms. This new system is really going to be good for him I think

I don't see an sec runningback being able to win it... booty probably will win it now that I think about it, but we can only hope he chokes a couple times

Yeah, McFadden would seem like a no-brainer at first glance but as the link shows, there are a lot of question marks around his supporting cast, from coaches to players.

The Heisman has not been a single season award for a long time. It's a career award now. You cannot be a bench warmer one year and a superstar the next and expect to be considered. For any player on the heisman watch lists, the race started for them at least two years ago.

Then why's Booty on it??

I would agree that the "Next year's" begins in the middle, towards the end of any given current season.

I'm not completely convinced that Flynn is going to be great, but I'm hopeful. As for getting invited to the ceremony or winning the Heisman - no chance.

In his favor, he'll be playing under Crowton who has been able to put up some really gaudy numbers when he has decent talent, LSU will be contending for a NC through the season, and he'll get publicity as being the QB that sat behind the #1 overall draft pick for 4 years.

Against him, is the fact that he's a QB in the SEC with a group of young inexperienced WRs, he's a first year starter, and doesn't have preseason hype for the Heisman.
