Someone on your job or at your local grocery store is speaking in a different language, say Spanish or Creole? Or on your job 2 people speaking a different language and laughing in your presence. Does this make you feel uncomfortable?
Not really. I employ a lot of Spanish speaking workers. I recently ordered Rosetta Stone. In the meantime, they speak a lot better English than I do Spanish. As to French or Creole, that's just cool. I wish I had paid attention in French class in HS.
I could care less what language people speak at home, but there needs to be a "national language of business" or however you want to call it. A person performing a job junction in this country needs to be able to fluently speak english.
Happens all the time here. I tell them to stfu or speak English. Jokingly of course. Although they usually get the underlying tone that I'm not really joking.
No. I think people should talk in whatever language they want to talk in. I don't pay attention to what my English speaking co-workers say when they aren't talking to me. What do I care what the Japanese girl is saying on the phone in Japanese. My office mate and I speak in Cajun French and reference a coworkers name for no reason if they are within ear shot. I think it is funny that they think we are talking about them when we are really talking about Fair Value Accounting or recruiting.
I don't really hold that grudge. I understand where you are coming from, but in my line of work, I would rather have a hard working Mexican than a native who likes to goof off and thinks he is worth more than he is. edit: Wow this thread took off. I was referencing Krypto's response. Guess I need to quote!
Agreed! Even when I have had laborers who had very poor English skills, they worked hard and we could always communicate what needed to be done. They usually are very interested in learning English, but they have to make a living in the interim.
Come on, homes, ya gots ta peep this chit an' jet wiff da flow. Be chillin' and look in da hizzle. Put yourself in da bruthas’ shoes.
